The Reds defeated the Yankees last night in a hard fought game by a score of 4-2 extending their winning streak against the Yankees to 5 straight.

The Reds won the following five games in a row vs. The Bronx Bombers.:

5-1 at Cinncinnati
4-3 at Cinncinnati
6-2 at New York
7-2 at New York
4-2 at New York (last night)

Why is he writing this no big deal information you say..

Just a little baseball nostalgia - those first four Reds wins are from The 1976 World Series when "The Big Red Machine" swept the Yankees four straight to win their second straight World Series (they beat The Boston Red Sox in 1975 - 4 games to 3 in a classic World Series - maybe the best ever played - but I digress).

Back to 1976 and that Big Red Machine - what a team they had..

The Reds won the won the NL West by 10 games over The LA Dodgers with a 102-60 record and then swept the Eastern Division Champs Philadelphia Phillies 3 games to none.

The 1976 Reds to this day are the only team to go undefeated since the advent of two and three tiered playoffs when they swept The Yankees in The World Series.

The Yanks had won the AL East going away by 10.5 games over The Baltimore Orioles and made it to the series in an exciting 3 games to 2 win over AL West Champ Kansas City Royals with a walk off home run in game five off the bat of 1st. baseman Chris Chambliss.

1976 was the first year the Yankees played in the new re-furbished Yankee Stadium and led by their captain and catcher, 1976 AL MVP, the late, great Thurman Munson and managed by Billy Martin The Yankees figured to give the Reds a tuff series but it was not to be.

The Reds had a very strong lineup led by two-time NL MVP, second baseman Joe Morgan while catcher Johnny Bench, first baseman Tony Perez, and outfielder George Foster provided enough power to drive in table setters, Pete Rose, and Ken Griffey. The series was no contest.

This was the first World Series to use the designated hitter. Dan Driessen was the DH for the Reds while the Yankees interchanged Lou Piniella, Carlos May, and Elliott Maddox. In game three The Reds DH Dan Driessen hit the first ever World Series home run by a DH off Yankee right hander Doc Ellis in the 4th inning. The blast knocked Ellis from the game.

Game four was delayed a day due to rain but the Reds didn't care. Four Cincinnati runs in the ninth blew open the game, triggering Billy Martin to lose his cool causing his ejection from the game.

The Reds outscored The Yankees 22 to 8 and became the first N.L. team to repeat as World Champions since the 1921-1922 New York Giants.

Johhny Bench was named the MVP of the series hitting .533 with 3 home runs and 6 runs batted in. Honorable mention goes to Thurman Munson who had 9 hits and a .529 batting average. Tragically the gritty and talented Munson would perish at the age of just 32 a few years later on August 2nd. 1979 in a fiery plane crash in his own private jet that he was just learning to pilot.

The Big Red Machine - arguably one of the best teams ever assembled in baseball history...

Just a little blast from the baseball past...

These two clubs have met just once in the regular season prior to this, as the Reds took two of three at home back on June 3-5, 2003.

It should also be noted that the Yankees are outscoring the Red Sox 11-3 in the series thus far.
