<!-- rbox ends here -->NEW YORK — The NBA is so angry at disgraced referee Tim Donaghy that it wants him to reimburse the league for the cost of his basketball shoes.
The NBA said in a court filing it spent $750 over three seasons to buy sneakers for Donaghy, who pleaded guilty last year to taking payoffs from gamblers.
Now, the league wants its money back. It also wants a court to force the referee to repay his salary, his airfare expenses and meal allowances, and cough up at least $4,500 for complimentary tickets he received over the year. All told, the league is seeking $1.4 million from Donaghy.
The written demand was filed Thursday at a federal court in Brooklyn.
Donaghy's attorney has called the league's demands an attempt to retaliate against his client for alleging widespread misconduct by NBA executives and employees.
Donaghy has admitted betting on about half the games he officiated for three seasons, beginning in 2003.

It may seem like nitpicking but this is common in libel cases.
Must be a slow day at the AP offices.

Libel cases? Are you refering to libel vs. slander? This isn't a libel case is it?

You could be right.

NBA: Donaghy owes $1.4 million

By Mike Jensen
Inquirer Staff Writer
The NBA said it wants disgraced referee Tim Donaghy to repay the league nearly $1.4 million for the games he bet on or provided information about and the legal costs of investigating his crimes. Counting to the penny - the request was for $1,395,104.89 - the NBA said in a court filing posted Thursday that the case has been an "unwelcome study in crisis management."
Donaghy and two classmates from Cardinal O'Hara have pleaded guilty to charges related to gambling on NBA games. They will be sentenced in July.
The league wants $577,312.89 back from Donaghy for his salary, expenses and airfare allowance from 2003-07, pro-rating the games Donaghy admitted he bet on or provided betting information about. Also, the NBA wants reimbursement for legal fees, including almost $250,000 to one law firm, and for the time league staff spent reviewing Donaghy game tapes.
The filing noted that Ronnie Nunn, the NBA's director of officials, spent 25 hours at a rate of $270 per hour. At 40 hours per week for 52 weeks, that would amount to $561,600 per year.
"What is profoundly troubling here is not only Donaghy's past crimes but also his recent conduct," attorney Paul Shechtman wrote in the filing. "As the Court knows, most defendants, particularly 'cooperating defendants,' seek to make amends with their victims to demonstrate their remorse. Donaghy has chosen a different course."
Shechtman wrote that Donaghy "launched a public campaign to defame the NBA's referees and its management. He has made unsupported accusations of widespread misconduct . . ."
Donaghy's attorney, John Lauro, could not be reached for comment last night.
