Martin Kaymer extended his overnight lead of five shots by one with a third-round 67 at the BMW International Open

Martin Kaymer, of Germany, will take a six-stroke lead into the final round of the BMW International Open after producing another faultless display at the Eichenried course, in Munich, on Saturday. Kaymer’s five-under-par 67 gave him a total score of 198, 18 under par, and left his nearest rival, Charl Schwartzel of South Africa who shot a 66, needing to make the second biggest catch-up of the year if he is to win. A further stroke behind is a group of four golfers, including Paul Casey, of England, and Thomas Levet, of France, who both shot 67s.
Kaymer started the third round five shots in front after a second-round 63 that was played alongside his hero Bernhard Langer. The 23-year-old from Dusseldorf then showed that he did not need his mentor to extend his advantage. He shot birdies on the 6th, 8th, 9th and 11th holes, before sinking a 25-foot putt on the final green for his fifth birdie.
Victory would take Kaymer, who won the Abu Dhabi Championship for his maiden title earlier in the season, from tenth place on Europe’s Ryder Cup table to sixth. Nevertheless, the German is determined to keep his feet on the ground. “I didn’t make so many putts today, but I still played well and I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” Kaymer said. “I can’t let myself think about what it will all mean, though, I must just go out, hope I have a big crowd supporting me, and enjoy it.”
If he does win, Kaymer will have outdone Langer because this title is the only one of all the German tour events that the former Masters champion has not won. “I heard that he hadn’t won it, but that is nothing compared to what he has done,” Kaymer said.
