MLB Match-Up Tuesday – Red Sox host struggling Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks were cruising right along in the National League West before a three-game sweep at the hands of Minnesota brought them back to Earth on the weekend. It could only get worse for the Diamondbacks, as they prepare to head to Fenway Park on Tuesday for the second of a three-game set with the Boston Red Sox, who are looking to create some space in the American League East.

Arizona Diamondbacks at Boston Red Sox – 7:05 PM ET
32-year-old Doug Davis (2-3, 3.65) followed up a shutout of Kansas City in his previous start with another stellar outing, allowing a run on three hits over six innings while striking out eight to lead the Diamondbacks to a 2-1 home win over Oakland. Davis has now given up a single run in his last 13 innings of work with 15 strikeouts, but he would do well to lower his rate of six walks. The ten-year southpaw, who is still receiving treatment for thyroid cancer, was pelted in his last meeting with the Red Sox, as he was tagged for five runs on six hits in only four innings as the Diamondbacks lost 10-3 at home.

JUSTIN MASTERSON (4-1, 3.00) BOUNCED BACK NICELY FROM HIS FIRST LOSS IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES AT CINCINNATI, AS THE 23-YEAR-OLD RIGHTHANDER GAVE UP A PAIR OF RUNS ON FOUR HITS OVER FIVE INNINGS TO PACE THE RED SOX TO A 7-4 VICTORY IN PHILADELPHIA. MASTERSON WAS BROUGHT UP FROM TRIPLE-A PAWTUCKET BECAUSE OF INJURY, BUT NOW THAT CURT SCHILLING IS GONE FOR THE YEAR, THE ROOKIE LOOKS LIKE HE IS UP WITH THE RED SOX FOR THE LONG HAUL. THIS WILL BE MASTERSON'S FIRST MEETING WITH THE DIAMONDBACKS.

HEADING INTO MONDAY'S SERIES OPENER, THE DIAMONDBACKS HAD WON FOUR OF THEIR SIX CAREER MEETINGS WITH THE RED SOX, INCLUDING A THREE-GAME SWEEP AT FENWAY IN 2002. THE DIAMONDBACKS SEEMED TO BE GETTING COMPLACENT AS THEY WERE RUNNING AWAY WITH THEIR DIVISION, AND MAYBE THEIR DESTRUCTION AT THE HANDS OF THE TWINS WILL BE THE JOLT THEY NEED TO REGAIN THEIR FOCUS. TAKE EXPERIENCE OVER YOUTH AS THE DIAMONDBACKS SHOULD SNATCH THIS GAME IN A CLOSE ONE ON TUESDAY.
