Ran the 4.2 mile mini-race this past weekend...any runners in the house?

I didn't train like I wanted to. There were hills out the ass. I finished with a time of 42.23 a 10.36 mile. not great i know, but where does this rank?

anyone here that doesn't run, ever, could keep a pace of a 10.36 mile through 3 decent size inclines? I would say 1-1.5 miles of it was inclined.

This is actually roughly my speed as well. Not exactly Michael Johnson speed but as least we are out there. Good for you.

I am very envious. I can't even run 4.2 yards without being winded.

I'm hitting the gym and changing my diet big time. My goal is to win a 10K by the end of October. Which I think I can, with some training. I never run. My wife runs 3-4 days a week and finished at a 10.06 mile. I tried to beat her on the last mile, but she pulled away.:grandmais
This is actually roughly my speed as well. Not exactly Michael Johnson speed but as least we are out there. Good for you.

That is damn good. Gives you something to work at. Most of all it is very healthy. Keep up the good work. Since I got to 40, my body is not the same. It is sore a lot more.

A nice goal to win the 10K, but to win it, you need to think 5-6 minute miles. To get from, let's say, a 9 minute mile on flat ground where you are probably at now to a 6 minute mile in that amount of time will be very difficult. However, it is a great goal to have....however, I would try to keep your goals realisitic, or else you will get frustrated.

After the 10K, you should try to train for a half marathon. Your goal there will be just to finish the damn thing.

My wife runs the Half.

2 years ago, no training and 5 beers the night before i ran a 1.07 6.2 mile.

Realistically, I think I could win one with a couple months training
A nice goal to win the 10K, but to win it, you need to think 5-6 minute miles. To get from, let's say, a 9 minute mile on flat ground where you are probably at now to a 6 minute mile in that amount of time will be very difficult. However, it is a great goal to have....however, I would try to keep your goals realisitic, or else you will get frustrated.

After the 10K, you should try to train for a half marathon. Your goal there will be just to finish the damn thing.

I could run it at 9:00 per mile - 10:00 minute miles is where I start to feel like I'm going too slow - but any increase in 9:00 minute miles for any distance just is unpleasant for me - anything of 5 miles is no fun either - I'm not a good runner either - I don't really like it - and only do it for health purposes - much rather play hoops

Not very difficult - impossible - I can run one mile in just under 7 minutes - 2 miles in 16 minutes - and as the distance increases so does the time - no way anyone running distances in 9 minutes is going to 5/6 minute miles - 5/6 is burning by elite athlete standards

I hope you can, I really do. Not trying to piss on your parade, but the ability to run a 10K in 30-35 minutes as opposed to in around an hour or just under will probably take longer than a couple of months to acheive.

A 31 minute 10K is a 5 minute mile. To run a 5 minute mile over 6 miles is moving.

Big Bet:

Congrats on your comittment to train and run a 10K in October. Winning a 10K is another thing. Many participants in these events are high school, college, or ex-competitive distance types. Like Heatwave mentioned, even in the most insignificant races, you are looking at a 29-32 minute winning time. I ran a few, years ago, and ran 37 minutes and was near a mile behind the winner. yea, but i am still about 20 lbs overweight. put me at 205lbs and i cruise....easy

not many 20lbs or so pounds over weights can run a 10 mins mile. scratch that, i seen it and they did....knock the 20lbs off me and i am at just under 9 easy. thing was, i wasnt too winded....put it this way, i know my body and i got what it takes

I am running the NYC Marathon in November
Here is a goal for you--my son who is 7 is shooting for a 57 minute 10k in the 4th of July race. Last year at 6 he ran a 1:01:01
We did a warm up tonight and he did 2 miles in 14:58 so I think he can do it--but this course the BIGGEST uphill I have ever seen-people even avoid it with their cars!!
