I always hear people speak of how important the shaft is (Driver especially).

But what about the shaft is really important:
1) Brand/Quality (expensive = good)
2) Customed to your swing (flex, kickpoint, etc.)

I understand both are important....but if I get a generic shaft (stock) that is customized to my swing, will the results be very similar to a High-end brand/model?

Some of these shafts are very expensive....is it really the "shaft"?

One that fits your swing. Some like boardy tip stiff(like me) others like a higher kick point (softer, more workable). I'd stick with a named brand like Grafalloy, Aldila or Fujikura. Get fitted if you're serious, you want a shaft and head combo that launches at the proper angle/spin rate. Same with irons shafts, for me X-100 are too harsh, S-300 balloon slightly (S-400 perfect flex). Maybe try and find a Callaway fitter with all the launch monitors and shaft setups.

I'm not hard core enough to mess with my crappy irons....just curious on the driver....

how about this example?

Driver A - $400 with the head you want and a stock shaft (nike, taylor made, etc) with the proper flex for your swing and kickpoint, etc.

or

Driver B - $300 for the driver.....and you can buy a Fujikura shaft with the same kickpoint/flex as the other specs for $200.....

Will Driver B outperform by a 25% increase in price from Driver A?

I agree to a point...that is why I don't really care about the shafts on my irons....if I need more distance, i'll just go up one club. (BTW, I have some of the shittiest clubs....titleist 990B irons)

but in regards to driver....when I catch it clean (less often, every day, soon my driver will be 50/50) I'd like to get the most distance out of it....will make up for my inability to hit a 3 iron.

Some golfers are picky when it comes to equipment, buying name-brand helps the resell value if you like to switch out clubs.

You can buy a $100 used FT-3 off ebay thats better than all the generic $40 drivers in proshops. Most weekend-hacks won't care. I think getting the proper flex is the key. A quality shaft really doesn't cost more than $65 and a used 2-3 year old driver performs just as good as 08 models. You could equally buy a Mizuno MP-001 460cc for $50 off ebay. It will perform as good as any with the right shaft for your swing.

I agree, although 3-woods are a whole other story. I carry 5 iron on with 3 hybrids 18 22 25. I had my best round last week with mostly hybrids off the tee, I used driver on 6 holes, hit one in a bunker, 2 ob, 1 in a gopher hole? but ended up with a 75.

Practice your short game.
