Tuesday's List of 13: Runnin' the bases: midterm NL grades

This week, we're giving midterm grades for each team for first half of the season; tomorrow, the American League. Next week, we'll analyze the 2008 amateur drafts of each organization.

Diamondbacks— Not too many 41-41 teams can say they're in first place; they were 20-8 at one time, have fared better against their division rivals, but they're struggling now. Grade: C.

Braves— Are 4-21 in one-run games; lost last 23 games on the road that were decided by one run. Glavine-Smoltz-Hampton are all hurt, as is Chipper, the bullpen is very shaky. Grade: C-

Cubs— Miss Soriano's offense very much; three best teams in NL are all in Central Division. They've been terrific at home and Japanese import Fukudome has done very well. Grade: A-

Reds— Volquez-Cueto-Thompson looks like good nucleus to a rotation, but Harang/Arroyo have struggled. Trading Dunn is again a hot rumor. Dusty keeps 'em playing hard. Grade: C+.

Rockies— Unmitigated disaster; nothing has gone right. Now rumors are that they might trade Holliday, because scumweasel agent Scott Boras represents him. Terrific. Grade: F.

Marlins— Always manage to contend, budgetary restraints or not; have potent lineup- Cantu has been big help at third base. Josh Johnson on way back to bolster rotation. Grade: A-

Astros— Were 30-23 at one point, then things went south; if one of your starting pitchers throws the general manager down to the floor in the clubhouse, its not a good sign. Grade: D-

Dodgers— Need to make a trade for some offense; they won a game Saturday when they didn't get a hit, then got three hits in next game, losing 1-0. Lucky they're in bad division. Grade: C-

Brewers— Gallardo blew out his knee early on, but Parra has won last seven decisions--- Crew has third-best record in NL. Fielder is poor advertisement for being vegetarian. Grade: B.

Metropolitans— Old, brittle lineup, impatient fans, infighting in the front office; it hasn't been much fun this year. Because Phillies are struggling, though, they're in the race. Grade: D-

Phillies— Only big league team to use same five starting Ps in every game; X-factor could be Kris Benson in AAA, coming back from arm injuries. They need to add pitcher(s). Grade: B+.

Pirates— Playing well at home, they can hit, but pitching has been a horror. Mientkiewicz has started games at third, which explains why they drafted third sacker with top pick. Grade: C.

Cardinals— Dave Duncan is worth his weight in gold as the pitching coach; contending when no one thought they would be any good this season. Schumaker is underrated. Grade: A+

Padres— Another disaster. Can't hit, don't have much speed, playing on home field with huge outfield. Farm system has two or three good pitchers at AA level, so help is on the way, just not now. At least the throwback uniforms are nice. Grade: F.

Giants— Terrific nucleus of young starting pitchers; outfield defense is way better this year. Bullpen has been toxic, but in a division that is awful, they still have a chance. Grade: C-.

Nationals— Brought in questionable character guy in Dukes, made horrible Church-Milledge trade. Guzman has had stellar year and Lannan has pitched well, just no support. Grade: C-.

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees [YES | 7:05 PM ET]

Rangers: The Rangers are 7-3 in Kevin Millwood's last 10 starts but a lot of that has to do with Texas' offense scoring a lot of runs than it does Millwood's pitching performance. In his last 10 outings, Millwood has allowed five runs or more five times. Millwood got hammered his last time out against Houston, allowing 12 hits and seven runs in just five innings of work. The key number for Millwood in this game is 1-4. He's 1-4 lifetime against the Yankees and 1-4 on the road this season.

The OVER is 7-2-1 in Millwood's last 10 starts.

Key Injuries - C Gerald Laird (.306; hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Yankees (-210, O/U 9.5): Joba Chamberlain is really coming into his own as a starting pitcher. In his last 18.1 innings on the mound, Chamberlain has allowed just two runs. Overall, the Yankees are 4-1 in games Joba starts. He's 1-1 in three appearances at Yankee Stadium with a solid 2.96 ERA. After two straight UNDERS, Chamberlain's last start went OVER the total even though he pitched a shutout, thanks to the Yankees scoring 10 runs.

Key Injuries - OF Hideki Matsui (.323; knee) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays [NESN | 7:10 PM ET]

Red Sox: Tim Wakefield has given the Red Sox a lot of good outings this year, going seven innings his last five times out. Over that span, Wakefield has given up a respectful 10 runs in 35 innings of work. The knuckleballer has absolutely owned the Rays over his career, going a spectacular 19-3 with an ERA of 3.16. However, he's only 1-3 with an ERA of 4.37 in nine road starts this year. The OVER is 4-1 in Wakefield's last five starts.

Red Sox are 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.

Key Injuries - OF Coco Crisp (.270; suspension) is OUT until July 3.

PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rays (-120, O/U 8.5): Matt Garza has done an exceptional job of giving the Rays a chance to win virtually every time he's stepped on the mound this year. Garza has allowed three runs or less eights times in his last 10 starts. Like most Rays hurlers, Garza is a stud at home, going 4-1 with a 2.51 ERA in seven starts at Tropicana Field. Don't expect many runs to be scored with Garza on the mound. The UNDER is 7-2-1 in his last 10 starts.

Rays are 26-7 in their last 33 games on turf.
The UNDER is 22-9-1 in Tampa Bay's last 32 home games.

Key Injuries - 2B Akinori Iwamura (.276; suspension) is expected to return.

PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Milwaukee Brewers at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET]

Brewers: After pitching well for a large portion of the season, Jeff Suppan has fallen on hard times of late. In his last three outings, Suppan is 0-2, allowing 12 runs in just 14.2 innings pitched. Suppan has pitched much better at home than on the road where he's 2-5 with a lofty 5.73 ERA. In seven starts versus the Diamondbacks, Suppan is 2-3 with two no-decisions. In his last 10 starts, the UNDER is a decisive 8-2.

Brewers are 20-8 in their last 28 games on grass.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Milwaukee's last 9 games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - RP Eric Gagne (10 saves; shoulder) has been activated off the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Diamondbacks (-130, O/U 9): It seems like 1999 since Randy Johnson actually won a game. In reality, it was May 18 but the Big Unit is a miserable 0-5 with two no-decisions since. In his last 30.1 innings pitched, Johnson has allowed 41 hits and 26 runs. The good news tonight for Arizona backers is Johnson has owned the Brewers in his career, going 18-8 with an ERA of 3.46. Even though he hasn't pitched well recently, the UNDER is still 7-1 in Johnson's last eight appearances.

Diamondbacks are 18-5 in Davis' last 23 home starts.
The OVER is 11-5-1 in Davis' last 17 starts overall.

Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants [WGN | 10:15 PM ET]

Cubs: After winning four straight starts, Jason Marquis was rocked his last time out, giving up seven runs to Baltimore in just four innings of work. Marquis has actually been hit hard in his last two outings, allowing 12 runs over 11 innings. He's bee solid on the road going 3-1 and Marquis is perfect 3-0 against the Giants in his career with an impressive 2.56 ERA. In his last six starts, the OVER is 4-2.

Key Injuries - OF Reed Johnson (.271; back) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Alfonso Soriano (.283; broken hand) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Giants (-120, O/U 8): Matt Cain has been far from impressive in 2008. Over his last 10 starts, Cain allowed four runs or more five times. Being at home hasn't helped Cain where he's just 2-3 with a 4.47 ERA in eight starts. Cain is 3-2 against the Chicago in his career and Cubs hitters are batting just .207 against him. Despite being inconsistent, the UNDER is 7-3 in Cain's last 10 starts.

PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Key Injuries - NONE

Streaking

Joba Chamberlin New York (2-2, 2.03)

All that talk earlier this year about keeping Chamberlin in the bullpen seems pretty ridiculous right now. The converted reliever threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Pirates in his last start, striking out seven while walking just one in the process.

The Yankees are now 4-1 in Chamberlin's starts and he has allowed just five earned runs over that stretch.

Cliff Lee Cleveland (11-1, 2.34)

It doesn't look like Cliff Lee's resurgent season is about to slow down anytime soon. The Indians have won all but one of his last five starts as Lee continues to keep batters on their toes with pinpoint control that has his strikeout-to-walk ratio at 96:16.

Only once this year has he walked more than two batters in an outing and he is just coming off a career-best 11-strikeout performance against the Giants.

Slumping

Mark Hendrickson Florida (7-6, 5.93)

Mark Hendrickson had critics shaking their heads when the Marlins won six of his first eight starts of the season. Since then though, the wheels have fallen off.

The big lefty hasn't won since May 25, allowing at least four runs in five of his last six trips to the hill. In his last outing he walked five and allowed five earned over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to Tampa Bay.

Tuesday MLB Gameday

The month of July begins with some key American League action, including Rich Harden and the Athletics taking on the Angels. Here's a look in your MLB Gameday . . .

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees, 7:05pm ET
Kevin Millwood (5-4, 5.08 ERA) vs. Joba Chamberlain (2-2, 2.03 ERA)

Millwood is 3-1 with three no-decisions over his past seven starts, but that defeat came in his most recent outing. The veteran righthander was knocked around for seven earned runs on 12 hits over just five innings of work against the Astros on June 26, which bumped his ERA up to 5.08 on the season. Millwood struck out six in that contest.

Chamberlain has pitched well in each of his past three starts, and he finally earned a win for his efforts last time out versus the Pirates. The righthander held Pittsburgh scoreless over 6 2-3 innings on June 25, giving up just six hits and fanning seven batters. Chamberlain had given up just two earned runs over his previous 11 2-3 innings.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays, 7:10pm ET
Tim Wakefield (5-5, 3.88 ERA) vs. Matt Garza (6-4, 3.76 ERA)

Wakefield is coming off a strong outing against the Diamondbacks on June 25 in which he gave up just two hits (and fanned six) over seven shutout innings. That effort moved the knuckleballer back up to the .500 mark on the season (at 5-5), and it pushed his ERA under 4.00. Wakefield, though, is 2-4 with three no-decisions in his past nine starts.

Garza has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each out his past four outings, but his record is just 2-2 over that span. The righthander is coming off a stellar performance against the Marlins on June 26 in which he surrendered just one earned run on one hit over nine innings, walking one and fanning 10. Garza dropped his ERA under 4.00 too.

Cleveland Indians at Chicago White Sox, 8:11pm ET
Cliff Lee (11-1, 2.34 ERA) vs. John Danks (5-4, 2.62 ERA)

Lee is 5-0 with two no-decisions over his past seven starts, and he's given up just six earned runs combined over his past four outings. The lefthander dazzled the Giants in his start on June 26, holding them to one run on four hits over eight innings (while striking out 11 batters). Lee has fanned 90 batters and walked just 16 so far this season.

Danks has pitched well lately as well - he's allowed just one run over his past three outings. The lefthander, though, was just 1-0 with two no-decisions over that span, and he's had six no-decisions in his past nine games. Still, Danks has given up three or more runs in just three of his 16 starts, and he pitched his team over the Tribe on April 3.

Oakland Athletics at Los Angeles Angels, 10:05pm ET
Rich Harden (5-0, 2.15 ERA) vs. Ervin Santana (9-3, 3.32 ERA)

Harden continues to avoid the disabled list, and he continues to pitch well for the A's. The oft-injured righthander is 5-0 with six no-decisions on the season, and Oakland is 9-2 in the games he has started for them. Harden blanked the Phillies over eight innings last time out, allowing just two hits and fanning 11 to drop his ERA to 2.15 on the year.

Santana picked up a no-decision against the Nationals last time out, but his team got the loss after he allowed four earned runs on four hits over six innings of work (with eight strikeouts). The righthander has already pitched against Oakland twice this year, getting a no-decision on June 8 despite a solid outing, and picking up a win on April 30.
