Laugh at High Gas Prices With a 282-MPG VW

With gas prices going through the roof and regulators requiring cars to be ever more miserly, Volkswagen is bringing new meaning to the term "fuel efficiency" with a bullet-shaped microcar that gets a stunning <DEL>282</DEL> 235 mpg.
Volkswagen's had its super-thrifty One-Liter Car concept vehicle -- so named because that's how much fuel it needs to go 100 kilometers -- stashed away for six years. The body's made of carbon fiber to minimize weight (the entire car weighs just 660 pounds) and company execs didn't expect the material to become cheap enough to produce the car until 2012.
But VW's decided to build the car two years ahead of schedule.

I wonder this myself, I know they do it to lower wind resistance and what not, but seriously.

A bigger car would equal a heavier car and maybe the engine they used would not be powerful enough to drive it at regular speeds. I don't understand why they don't simply meet in the middle, make a decent looking, safer car that gets 80-100mpg instead of like 170 and make a killing.

Looks like a rolling Coffin ....on the highway after you get it you can just stay in it and be buried... as you die you can say but I got 235MPG and I slept in a holiday Inn Express last night!

If you think about it...this car will be safer than my motorcycle that get 70 miles to the gallon...my bike has no airbags or metal around me! guess its all about your risk level...there is a place for it...but its not for everyone.

you will be laughing at gas prices but everyone else on the road will be laughing at you...that is the ugliest thing I have ever seen in my life...and as for safety im willing to bet its safe...the smart car--looks like a big wheels and I said u would die if you hit a pole at 15mph but I looked into it and it is one of the safest vehicles one can be in...you will be surprised
