With two outs in the third inning, Kevin Youkilis hit a deep fly ball to left field that Johnny Damon appeared to have in his grasp. Damon's momentum carried him into the wall.

Damon had the ball as a snow cone in his glove, but couldn't keep it inside as he crashed into the wall.

The ball pops out of the glove of Damon as he slams into the wall in left field trying to corral Youkilis's fly ball.

After leaving Damon's glove, the ball balanced for a few beats on the wall in left field as the Yankee outfielder tumbled to the ground.

Fans behind the left-field wall try to motion to a dazed Damon that the ball has come back onto the field of play.

One gutsy effort by Damon...

Center fielder Melky Cabrera came over to assist Damon, who was clutching his left side after the play. He left the game and was replaced by Brett Gardner. Youkilis ended up with a two run triple and never scored in the inning.

Note: the guy in the background wearing the Red Sox home game jersey captured at least one fly (the real kind) while watching the play mouth agape.

The thread is about a single play and a real gutsy effort. Let's not turn it into a namecalling bashfest for no reason.

Thanks, wil.

What I found interesting is that the umps admitted they didn't know
what the ruling should have been if the ball laid to rest on the
top of the wall.

Yeah, cuz it happens so often.

I'm sure there is no rule for this, and any situation not covered in the rulebook, the umpire just has to use his best judgment.

Ball didn't bounce Boston's way today, with the exception of a tough hop at A-Rod in the 1st inning. Wasn't enough to prevent a 10-3 loss to the Yankees, though.
