He might be the worst catcher in baseball this year. AJ's numbers are 1000000 times better than his and he calls a better game, based on pitching ERA's.

This is the worst pick I have ever seen.

He should exclude himself from the All-Star game with his horrendous performance this season. He's an automatic out pretty much.

He really should. He should say I don't deserve to be there, or if he wants to save face then fake an injury.

He brings a lot of good intangibles even though its true he isnt at the top of his game right now. Its a solid pick and a smart pick.

The Red Sox have a huge fan base that voted him onto the team. That is the price a league like Major League Baseball pays for allowing the fans to vote who makes the all star team. I know in the past players who were out for the season were voted on because their names were printed on the ballot before the injury occured.

Not the end of the world.

Huh? He wasn't voted in by the fans. He was voted in by the players because the players hate AJ. IDK if you thought he got voted in but Mauer did. So while I'd agree if the fans voted him in, they didn't, it was the players.

Well it does matter because the winner of the AS game gets home field in the world series. Which is why MLB should do away with that bullshit and just make it what it is: an EXHIBITION game!!

All In Aint Nothin'

I thought he was voted in as the starter, have not been following the pregame press yet.

The players voting him as a back up tells you how well thought of he has been over the years. I hope he does skip the game for some reason though. He is only a .264 career hitter anyway and was in that area thru May but June was just a ruff month for him. White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski or even Baltimore's Ramon Hernandez are more deserving this year.

Omissions that could easily qualify.

Dontrelle Willis
Hideo Nomo
Jim Thome
Brian Giles
Mariano Rivera
Gil Meche
Mike Mussina
Rocco Baldelli
Corey Koskie
Octavio Dotel
Magglio Ordonez
Alex Gonzalez (Marlins).

NEW YORK (AP)—Alex Rodriguez won the popular vote and a slew of Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs will join him in the starting lineup at the All-Star game.

Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis were elected by fans from the World Series champion Red Sox. Alfonso Soriano, Kosuke Fukudome and rookie catcher Geovany Soto of the Cubs were chosen in results announced Sunday.

Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun overtook Ken Griffey Jr. in the final week of balloting. The Tampa Bay Rays, with the best record in the majors, did not have a single player elected to start the July 15 event at Yankee Stadium. Rodriguez, the Yankees third baseman, received the most votes overall. Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley led the NL.

The AL starting lineup: Youkilis at first base, Pedroia at second base, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Rodriguez at third base, outfielders Josh Hamilton of Texas, Ichiro Suzuki of Seattle and Ramirez, and Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer.

Ortiz was elected to start as the designated hitter, but a wrist injury will keep him sidelined. Rangers slugger Milton Bradley will take Ortiz’s place.
Soriano, who has been out with a broken left hand, may return in time to play.

Starting for the NL: Houston first baseman Lance Berkman, Utley at second base, Florida shortstop Hanley Ramirez and Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones, with Soriano, Fukudome and Braun in the outfield. Soto will become the first rookie catcher to start for the NL.

Fan voting for the starters ended Wednesday. In a close race, Hanley Ramirez held off Milwaukee’s J.J. Hardy and Houston’s Miguel Tejada at shortstop.

Once again, the league that wins the All-Star game will get home-field advantage in the World Series.

The AL has not lost an All-Star game since 1996 at Veterans Stadium. Since then, the AL has won 10 and tied one.

Enough with the bullshit. You and I both know that Varitek on the team no matter how he got on is a fucking joke and just goes to show how full the bandwagon really is for the Sawks. Pathetic.

considering MLB players voted him onto the team as a reserve, not fans ( they picked Mauer) the last two posts could not be more dumb.

I don't pay vote/attention/care about how players are voted onto the team, it seems they change something every year whether it's who the players vote on or the fans voting on the 32nd player now every year. Doesn't matter who voted in Varitek, it's ridiculous.
