Why do people commonly refer to people on this site as degenerates?

I understand some if not half of the guys on here may have some issues including a gambling problem or drugs or whatever but I'd venture to say some if not half are upstanding contributers to society.

- I have a very good job
- I have a very good family
- I attend all my family's social and school events
- I am college educated
- I spend no more than $100 a month on gambling and I've built that initial amount up to a very sizeable amount so I haven't deposited in some time.

Does posting here make me a degenerate? I'd like to think not. I'd like to think I'm like most guys here in that I find good conversation with fellow sports fans who oh by the way like to throw some cheese on some games every now and then.

Any thoughts?

The old Rob that lied his ass off got hot chics with nice bums and tramp stamps.

The new Rob who wishes to be 100% honest and is very forward about spending a lot of time at a 'sports information site that has heavy discussion about sports wagering', is not getting anywhere with girls.

The credentials mean next to nothing once you say that. But if you said you were a part time pro poker player, I'm sure everything would be OK. It's crap.

Degenerates are the hard core gamblers who cant control their addiction. Mind you, the term degenerate would also apply to any addiction such drugs and alcohol.

Any time a person has to beg, borrow, or steal to get their fix is a degenerate.

I guess that's my question then. Why is it assumed everyone that posts here has an addiction?

I don't believe the perception about posters here is as bad as you're suggesting.

I don't think everybody is a degenerate gambler, although I'm sure there are some (maybe many).

My guess is the degenerate's think everyone else is in the same boat with them.

PS: I was a degenerate, or at least close to being one, but that was some time ago.

same here, i was posting college basketball picks on a roll starting off with 250, built that into 10k, all documented on the forum. went crazy one night, lost 4k, all documented. told myself to quit. couldnt. came back, tried to be disciplined again like i was before, got up to +11k, lost 2k, bad run, then just stopped. tired of all the stress, especially close losses. came back, tried it this season, but my head adjusted or something, maybe because i was busy with other things to fill my time, and i just stopped betting.

i think i've bet maybe 500 dollars total this whole year. if i deposit money, i deposit just like 50 bucks.

It's only a few stereo typing the many. Read the Rubber Room enough and you will hear just about every known insult in the English language, Politics is not far behind when it comes to posters insulting each other.

If you really want to see degenerate gamblers, go to cheaper sections of small 2nd rate race tracks, OTB offices in large cities, and is some of the real cheap casinos around the country.

Forum posters have to at least own computers that have access to the internet, that in itself is a small step above the real gambling degenerate. Probably over 95% of the posters here at the Rx and at other sports wagering forums have, jobs, with homes or apartments to live in, most have cars to drive, many have or are part of a family and are not starving or on any kind of welfare. A certain percentage are actually very well off.

Occasionally scammers and con artist come and go and there is no telling what their social standing might be.

Come to a Bash and meet the rank and file average poster, few are degenerates in the real sense of the word as it applies to gamblers..

Hey Wil, the political forum rivals the RR only when one particular poster is posting.

It's like when you were younger and your friends called each other "alky" or "alcoholic" even though it wasn't true. Most of the time it's just said in fun. Don't read too much into it.

yeah....degenerate is just a great word.....like when you tease someone and called them gay...they aren't homo (well...usually)

I have a decent job, a great family, attend family functions, and contribut to society.

I also consider myself a degenerate though.....last week some poster (not gonna name him, but @@#* you bastard) got me to jump on one of Uno's UFC picks even though I knew nothing about the people fighting. I watched with great interest and looking back....very degenerate thing. Going on tilt in a poker game or chasing sportsbetting losses are all "degenerate" qualities.

I don't think being a degenerate means you are a burden on society, and I do think the rx is filled with many degenerates.....that is LOCK CITY!

I've never ever used the word in my life and I don't think anyone of any color should use it ever. It has no place in society.

I thought you were safe if you ended it with -a instead of -er.
