Why is the RMV always crowded?

Registry of Motor Vehicles for those that don't know. I mean I went there in the morning before they even opened hoping no one would be there. Holy shit like 60 people waiting outside and that was just the licensing section. There was another 30 at the registration/plates section. Then I went around 1pm and more than 150 people. I might have to take the ferry to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket which is about 15 minutes away from my house. I bet there's nobody at those places. I just hate waiting 2 hours in line for a license renewel. I know you can do it online now but I did it 5 years ago so now I have to go to the RMV. You'd think with that online renewel thing there'd be less people but no.

I guess so. I know some people in Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket so I might as well pay them a visit as well. Anybody know the cheapest ferry to both islands?

they don't take appointments? I don't know where you went, but go to one in a more affluent area (which it sounds like you are doing w/ MV/Nantucket). For some reason there are always fewer people at DMVs in those areas.

I think a major reason is there's no incentive for the RMV employees to move things along.

Had to get my liscense renewed last year and a new picture was required, so I had to go in. When I finally got called up and had my picture taken, the young guy (in his 20's) asked if I wanted to take it again. I looked at it and said "no". I then added, "there's a lot of people waiting, better to move things along". His reply was - "I'm here until 5PM no matter how many get processed". In other words, he didn't give a shit about anyone waiting.

You might be able to renew at an AAA office, you can in CT, anyway.

Go to RMVMASS.gov, click on "branches/waittimes" will tell you what's up. They also have lisc. only branches in some malls.

DMV here in Florida has branches around the county.

Capacity of maybe 120 people in waiting room, but I've found that in most midweek afternoons outside of the 29th of the current month to about the 3rd of the next month, there's never more than maybe 20, 30 people.

And the one I go to has 20 different DMV Operators so they roll through processing pretty quick.
