Those of you who have been making money betting against the New York Mets this year may have to switch gears.
New manager Jerry Manuel seems to have things going in the right direction based on recent form. I know the team doesn't have any sort of amazing record in recent weeks like the Minnesota Twins or Detroit Tigers do. They might be on the verge of going on that kind of tear though.
Why do I say that?
As I write this, the Mets trail Philadelphia by 1.5 games in the NL East. If they had split the four-game set over the weekend, it would be 2.5 games. If they had dropped three of four, it would have been 3.5 games. You know Philadelphia was hoping to go for the jugular and knock the Mets back down the ladder. A sweep for the Phillies would have meant the Mets were 4.5 games back...and would have suggested that this Mets team wasn't ready to compete for the pennant.
The Mets are ready to compete for the pennant!
A few days ago, the Mets were down 11 betting units at Las Vegas prices. After the 7-0 win over Lincecum, it was down to about 7 betting units. Anyone with a "fade the Mets" strategy should stop now and pocket the winnings in my opinion. Some of you may have already done that because the team has been winning. I'll grant that the Mets will be pricey in the coming days. New York teams usually are in the betting lines. Recent form suggests they'll be winning anyway. Wait for an injury, or some news development before fading this team right now.

Am I ready to say you should bet on the Mets every day?
Anyone who's lived in Vegas or Reno for a long time knows you have to be careful betting favorites. They have to maintain a strong clip just to grind out a profit. Any mini-slump and your profit is gone. I'm confident in saying that you should stop fading the Mets if that's what you've been doing. I'd definitely look for value prices to back them in their current form. I'll let the next few series decide whether or not this is a team that might get red hot and make the prices borderline irrelevant. It seems that every campaign has one or two teams like that in the second half of the season.
Here's what's ahead for the Mets:
It's very important that you pay attention to this NOW. You don't want to wake up on 7/28 thinking, "Man, I should have been taking the Mets the last few weeks." Keep an eye on things and see if you can pick some good investment spots.

- The Mets are 12-8 in their last 20 games under Manuel. That's. 600 baseball, and very few teams are playing .600 baseball this year.
- The Mets posted that 12-8 record against a very tough schedule. They just finished an eight-game road trip to St. Louis and Philadelphia...two of the few good teams in the National League. The Mets went 5-3 in those eight games. That speaks very well for their chances to post a better record when facing all the losers in the NL.
- The Mets split four games with the Yankees from the superior American League during that stretch as well. Going 7-5 against the Yanks, Cards, and Phillies, with 75% of the games on the road is a very strong effort. The 7-5 doesn't scream "red hot" to anyone. In context, it's a power performance. I should also note that the Mets posted a 9-6 record against the American League this year, tied for best in their league.
- The Mets, in their first game stepping down in class blasted the Giants and Tim Lincecum 7-0. That was a statement result in what could have been a letdown spot. Lincecum has been having a strong season. New York hit him for three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

- The offense is really coming around. In the last eight games, the team has scored 7-7-11-2-9-4-10-7. Hey, seven isn't just a lucky number on a slot machine. If you're regularly scoring seven runs or more, you're just going to obliterate people. The Mets managed to do that in six of the eight games listed. It's been a low scoring year in baseball. The Mets are about to run roughshod over low scoring teams. Finally, the high priced bats are connecting!
- The starting pitching has settled down. It's easy to do that when the offense keeps staking you to big leads. You know Santana is going to be good if he's healthy. Maine has been inconsistent, but is capable of huge efforts. He'll do better with leads. Pelfrey and Perez are guys you have to cross your fingers with in close games. That's less of a concern now that the offense is scoring. And, Pelfrey's gone on a hot run of late that has him pitching more like Maine than Perez anyway. Oh, and there's Pedro Martinez. The Mets have basically gotten NOTHING from him so far. There's only upside if he ever remembers how to get people out.
- The bullpen has a rejuvenated Billy Wagner. Through Tuesday Night his ERA was 2.50, and he had 20 saves for a team that had been underachieving. He only had one loss on the year as well.
