Little League 6 last years ages 5-7 and 11-12. 8th grade hoops for 22 years and freshman boys hoops for 3 years.

I have 12 and 8 year old boys and only coached them their 1st year. I may help out now but want them to experience other personalities. They have been lucky to be with very good coaches.
Its really simple if you state your rules in a parent/kids meeting before the season starts at how things are going to be so they have nothing to come back at you with. Homework, grades, practice, priority. No practice, no play. Grades fall, no play. Only excuses for missing practice is family emergency, homework, or vacation. Works well for me. Oops, or sick.

This is the first summer since 1991 I'm not coaching baseball.

Little League, Babe Ruth (won a district championship), Micky Mantle (won a state championship) & Connie Mack.

Commissioner of league with 400+ kids
Co-founder of largest fall baseball league in CT (90 teams and 1,500 kids when I left)
Co-founder of ECTB travel league
Hosted and ran LL & Babe Ruth district tournaments
Co-hosted and managed ECTB World Series

I was asked to take over the Micky Mantle team this year when the coach quit at the last second, I wanted to but I couldn't. My wife yelled at me for even talking about it.

I see myself returning in 2010, next summer will be as crazy as this summer with graduations and visitors and shit.

High school lacrosse coach.

My son plays, but he play because I coach. I don't coach because he plays, if that makes any sense.

Make sure they run plays each and every time up the court unless there is a fast break opportunity with your best player. I have reffed basketball at just about every level for 11 years and the worst thing about the 10 year olds is that most coaches don't have them run any plays. Therefore only the best player on the team and maybe one or two girls get to shoot. Also teach them not to shoot right away. Many of them play so frantic at such a young age and they never develop any skills whatsoever. Make it a clear point that winning isn't so important. Let the girls have fun while developing their skills but run them through some pretty difficult practices with running and water breaks.

Baseball coach. Went undefeated during the season only to lose in the first round of the playoffs. We will dominate next season. The championship is coming home baby!

Coach 10-11 year old baseball in Hollywood, Florida. It is nice to be a part of the game instead of just watching and betting on it.

The best part about coaching is teaching kids respect for the game.
