Just recently I have picked this up and I suck but it is a ton of fun trying to out-plan and out-think someone sitting across from you...

anyone else here play? are you good? do you have a strategy that would help me become a better player?

Chess is one of the best games to bet on between two people because it is 100% smarts and skill with no luck involved. I play quite frequently, though not as much as I used to a few years ago.

Tough to really give tips on chess but the main thing is trying to think ahead of the move you are making. Each piece according to strategy has a number ranking with more points for the more valuable pieces, so as a basic guide try to plan your strategy around it:

Pawn=1
Knight=2
Bishop=3
Rook=4
Queen=5

This means if you can sacrifice a knight for example to take an opponents bishop it would be a beneficial move for you. The game of kings :toast:

Many, many venues for online chess.

Best way to get better is to read a few basic lessons on Openings and then practice, practice.

As you progress, begin studying Midgame and then Endgame strategies.

Make sure you are aware of the two moves commonly ignored -

1) Castling

2) Capturing en passant

Echoing Drew's post....

Putting the opponent's King in checkmate involves a combination of positioning which is usually facilitated by reducing the number of pieces on the board.

Thus "trades" of equal value pieces are inevitable and should not be feared. Indeed, initiating an equal Trade is often a sound strategy as it can help break up an opponent's attack and/or defensive setup.

Knowing how to best proceed when you are down to half or less of your starting 16 pieces is certainly a vital part of the "endgame" as mentioned in my last post.

Oh, and if you're a fledgling player, please realize and respect the courtesy of Resigning your game when it becomes out of hand.

If you're playing an opponent of equal skill and fall behind by two or more back row troops, you're very unlikely to rally and it's considered polite etiquette to Resign and not drag your opponent through the final 10 to 20 moves that might be needed to further exploit their advantage and set up an actual Checkmate.

En passant is a move few know about, i'ts tough to describe so check out the following link:

http://www.mahalo.com/How_to_capture_en_passant

It is essentially a unique capturing move between 2 pawns that can be done in certain situations.

Yep.

If you're not familiar with it, you might get caught and will be puzzled as to why you lost your piece.

If you ARE familiar with it, but your opponent is not, short term ill will can be caused if you employ this peculiar move and your opponent perhaps thinks you're making shit up.

Found that out the hard way when playing a game back during one of my stays in the Dallas County Jail during the 1980s.

Was playing this big, big street banger type with gambling stakes of "Winner gets the loser's breakfast tomorrow morning" and I pulled the en passant and just about got my ass kicked before I politely retracted the move.

I used to bet chess at Pinnacle before they shut the door to me...

Anyone know of an online sight that allows you to play against a computer..being able to adjust difficulty levels and time limits etc..?

Playing that mini putt putt we have here gets old quick-D

In short, what I'm saying is that most chess players with a modicum of decent experience will rarely leave a back row piece exposed without the possibility of an immediate Trade.

So if you yourself are caught out more than once and fall behind by 2+ back row pieces, you'll require tremendous luck that the opponent will make a clumsy mistake before beating you.

FUN TOPIC...Have not actually played a game of chess in several years, though I was certainly a periodic player from about age 12 into my late 30s.

Brings to mind a guy I have not thought of for many, many years.

When I was maybe 16, I was introduced to this other teenage kid via the church. He had been in a car accident and was quadraplegic and could not talk. But he could move his fingers.

My parents would take me to his assisted living facility once a week (for maybe a year or so) and I would play chess with him. The nurse would position his hands near the board sufficiently where he could point with his finger which piece to move and I would move it where he told me via a soft grunt.

Wow....one of my earliest life experiences learning Just How Good I Had It as an able bodied person.

I DID used to know one...but I'd have to dig around via Search engine to find it again.

As for gambling, I had a buddy in my college years who would play me for money. We would use the Backgammon style "doubling cube" on all our games and of course that could stimulate Resignations if one guy went to jump the stakes from 16 to 32 (or 32 to 64).

so en passant seems like a pretty straight forward move but i could see why some one would call bullshit on it. essentially someone moves two spaces on their first move of one of their pawns as a one space move would result in capture and you are able to move into the spot where they would have been had they only moved one space and you still capture the piece.

essentially the player cannot move that pawn at all.

good info as far as resigning if in a whole you cannot get out of. i am unfamiliar with the etiquette.

Oh hell yeah....

Just googled "Online chess" and got 1.87 million hits....heh

Too late tonight for me to check some of 'em out...But this thread has seriously got me intrigued to do just that ASAP.

Anyone reading this who does dig into some of those sites and finds a good place to play against a non-human, please report back to this Thread.

1) Correctly noted that the "threat" of the en passant move is a legitimate strategy that can be employed by having your own pawn on the fifth rank and thus essentially 'locking down' one or even two of your opponent's pawns which have not yet moved.

2) Yes, knowing the etiquette certainly makes for more smooth play, especially if you're challenging yourself by playing opponents who are better. Once you get down by two back row pieces, you can play a few more moves in hopes the guy makes a careless error to allow you to regain a piece, but failing that, it's certainly polite to acknowledge reality - resign and start fresh.

Any chess player with mileage knows full well that the game is best learned by playing again and again and again. And there's little to be learned from unduly dragging out a lost cause for an extra 10 to 20 minutes.

Which is what happens when an inferior player gets behind by 2+ pieces. Knowing his huge disadvantage, he hems and haws looking for some kind of miracle rally move and meanwhile the opponent is just twiddling his thumbs, wishing a new game could be started.

I'm an English major and believe me, the mental brain twist I experience when seeing common misspellings is far more a sign of Mental Madness in me than your spelling error is for you.

So maybe I might score higher in a Spelling Bee than you, but at the end of the day, I have to still live inside my Insane Brain while you're enjoying life in normal fashion.

GO MARLINS...watching it here via the FSN feed from South Florida and he's certainly making Marlins dog bettors smile.
