Iowa could very well be the leading wine producing state 5-10 years from now.

The last time I checked the only respected regions were mid Cali up, Oregon and Washington - and northern NY for ice wines.

The Upper Midwest is starting to make some respectible wines.

The problem is the growing season is short and its tough to produce a vine as good as those in places like northern CAL and the upper northwest regions. Vines need a minumum of five years to produce a decent wine and somewhere in the neighborhood of nine years to produce a wine that is extemely profitable and award winning.

Obviously a place such as Iowa has great soil coupled with a perfect growing season in the summer....that's the pluses.

Just started learning about all this a few months ago, still in the neophite learning stage. I believe Iowa had only something like 4 winieries a mere 4 years ago, they now have over sixty!

Santa Barbara/Solvang area (Southern California) has a lot of great wineries. Some fabulous Syrahs and Pinot Noirs (amongst others).

I was just in Santa Ynez a week ago (fires everywhere) - I wouldn't consider that Southern California - that's the middle - I went to a winery called Black Jack where they filmed Sideways - to be honest - I had never heard of any of the wineries and they did not remotely compare to those of Napa Valley - I think most would agree

You're better off taking a vacation in Spain or France and finding some small local places who'd be interested in an export deal with you and you ship the cases to the states and sell them.
