In gambling, just the money. Success is great, but I wouldn't be doing it for £2 stakes.

In life, the pursuit of knowledge. Academia is a great match for that, there's always somebody who will challenge your opinion and force you to re-evaluate, even beyond your own field of expertise. Also travel, which fits well with conferences and employer-paid travel around the world. Unfortunately other than expenses the money pretty much sucks, hence the gambling sideline ;-)

If money is the sole factor that motivates you, when you see an armored truck or go in a bank what exactly is stopping you from taking or robbing it?

Some things that are motivating factors in life:

Money/Poverty
Acceptance by others/family
Health
Love/Sex
Fear of Old age/Death.

Likely most of what you do throughout the day is a byproduct of the motivation in one of these categories.

Wife and kids. In truth I don't think I am motivated by money any longer, they have replaced that motivation. I work for them, try to be a good person for them, make money for them, everything I do. If I didn't have them I would seriously consider leaving the country and leading a slower, more simple life.

In the past I was motivated to make my father proud. One of his cousins would always go on and on about how great his kids were, always bugged me even though I like him and his kids. Basically wanted my father to do the same, but he wasn't the type of guy to do that in front of you. Would always do that when you weren't around so you would hear it from uncles/cousins/friends and stuff.

It can be said that fear is the greatest motivator of all, ie fear of being poor, fear of being alone, fear of being incarcarated, fear of dying etc.

Agree with this.

For me personally I need it, starting out with my own business I knew I had to quit my day job and do it full time as I require the fear of knowing I need to bust my ass advertising, finding clients and working or I'd go broke.

At the end of the day though, it all comes down to money I guess.
