both were a lil before my time, i caught the tail end of Birds career and never saw Maravich although ive been reading the book Maravich, and apparently this guy was amazing in college. was Bird better in college? did Maravich's greatness continue in the pros and how come we dont list maravich up there with jordan, bird and magic as greatest of all time? cuz of Bird's rings?

This question cannot be answered imo..They broke the mold when they made both these guys..Bird had a far better supporting cast in the NBA..In college, he singlehandidly put Indiana St on the map..And we have not heard from then since..

Larry Birds come by as often as Haleys Comet..Gotta go with bird

Think of it..Big goofy lookin white dude who was better than any one else for awhile:think2:

Bird made his teammates better, Maravich didn't. But then, Maravich didn't have good teams around him either.

last 2 posts are rediculous. MAravich did make his team better and was a much better passer than Bird. Bird was a ball hog. MAravich is top 10, was a better passer and shooter than Jordan.

If Maravich made his team better, how come he only won one playoff series in 5 attempts, and that was with Boston in Bird's rookie year?

Bird was the greater pro of the two...Pistol Pete was the greatest college player that I have ever seen..big difference...

Rail is a very disturbed individual...Bird was no ball hog...

Yeah I too was wondring what he meant..Bird did keep the ball more?..Maravicj shot half the time down the court..

Birds "was capable" of being as great a passer there ever was..Remember those perfectly placed bounce passes when a guy was on the run?.The over the head passes?..over the shoulder?..etc..

Maravich NBA supporting casts were HORRIBLE..He made bad teams decent..

He never had a "Pot Smokin Chief", Frankensteins Monster, Piece of "Cornbread", Leopard faced defensive great, baby brat ex MLB player, "Tiny" guy, etc..

Heck even the Celtic reserves were stars on other team aka Scott KC King Wedman, Gerald Henderson, Ernie Digregorio, Mush mouthed talkin jinxed MFer Dalton Gang walton, Greg go fly a Kite, Quin dont call me bill Buckner, Kermit the frog I punched Rudy T in the face Washington, Sydney Wicks etc.................

No one in the world could do things with a basketball that Pete Maravich could do.

Pistol Pete would have made the 3pt line obsolete if he had the opportunity for 3's...again, the greatest college player ever...Larry Bird was a better pro....

Fell kinda sorry for today's generation they will never have a Bird vs Ervin Johnson,Lou Alcindor vs Elvin Hayes college rivalry ever again in our life times.

Game of the Century

Main article: Game of the Century (college basketball)

On January 20, 1968, Alcindor and the UCLA Bruins faced the Houston Cougars in the first-ever nationally televised regular season college basketball game. In front of a record 52,693 fans at the Houston Astrodome, Elvin Hayes scored 39 points and had 15 rebounds--while limiting Alcindor to just 15 points--as Houston beat UCLA 71-69. The Bruins 47-game winning streak ended in what has been called the "Game of the Century". Hayes and Alcindor would have a rematch in the 1968 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament where UCLA would defeat Houston in the semi-finals 101-69.

I never got to see Pistol play, but the clips of him scoring and how inventive he is around the basket are jaw dropping.

Larry in his prime? Oh come on. He was the first point forward type that could grab a defensive rebound and make the full court outlet pass, back when it was unheard of. Now almost all players are expected to be able to do this.
