I know perhaps many of you out there have yet to see TDK. I've seen both and I"m a fan of both actors. With that said, and without any bias to Ledgers passing, I'd have to say unequivocally it's Heath Ledger.

His potrayal was straight out haunting in this movie. I know there are two different styles of characters. Nicholson's sinister but comcial portrayal vs. Ledgers psychopathic version.

In the end its an undenyable nod to Ledger's version.

thoughts???

I think they both played their characters to perfection, but I will say that I liked Ledgers joker version better than nicholsons.

Ledger by far but it was a darker movie. I think if you asked Jack to play a darker character he could have. The entire cast is amazing in the new series. Gary Oldman for example. I didnt even realize it was him the first time I watched Batman Begins. That being said I think Ledger should win some awards for his performance. His "one on one" scenes were amazing.

Apples and oranges.
Two different style of actors.
Two different interpertations.

Can't go wrong with either.

It's Ledger, EASILY.

When Jack gives the "Can somebody tell me what kind of a world we live in..." line, he isn't even being the Joker. It's just Jack being Jack with a Joker costume on.

Every last frame that Ledger appears in the Dark Knight, he is the Joker 110%. He took the role to a level that only more serious actors wish they could.

Very much agree with this analysis.

Nicholson's Joker was very faithful to the DC Comics version as portrayed for decades.

And Ledger's Joker was very faithful to the Frank Miller "Dark Knight" graphic novels which came out in the 90s and presented a much more hardcore detective style for Batman and a much more psychopathic series of villians.

After looking at your preview clip..Nicholson looks more like the joker I imagine..Heath looks like a sick Barnum and Bailey`s castaway clown

Ayuh....the Romero/Nicholson Jokers were patterned after the DC Comics character with carefully painted face and hair.

The Joker in The Dark Knight graphic novels was not a 'cartoon villian'. Rather, he was a very high IQ sociopath who not only takes pleasure in getting over with crime (robberies, kidnapping) but revels if there is a high level of pain, agony and death to go with it.

As such, he doesn't spend a lot of time primping in the mirror to make sure his face paint is properly aligned.

Think Hannibal Lector x2

Ledger was great, a unique take on the role.
Is it just me or did anyone else feel like the last 30 minutes turned into typical hollywood fare, very confusing story line with unnecessary violence. The final ending was great, the experiment with the ferries makes sense, the other scenes someone please explain the relevance.

Heath was brutal... who said these two jokers were entirely different is correct, I prefer the dark/sociopath joker rather than the vain/funny joker that was portrayed on Burton's movie. Still, neither of us I think means disrespect to Mr. Nicholson... he's a master in the art of acting, but that Batman movie was too much 80's for my taste

I imagine he could have as he's shown he can do dark and sociopathic in the past.

It's just Jack being Jack with a Joker costume on

That's no different from 99% of other actors, including most of the 'greats'. They almost always play characters that are similar in nature, style etc.

I tottally agree, original batman, anger management, a few good men, and as good as it gets, Nicholson plays the same sarcastic angry man.

As for ledger, he has really never played the bad guy, he can really act in different roles, from gay cowboy to sadistic villian shows that Heath is a better actor and a better Joker.

Jack Nicholson is better at being Jack Nicholson with face paint.

I will agree with this statement even though I have yet to see the movie. I also agree with Dsethi among others, I can not imagine this clown from Brokeback Mountain and Knights Tale being able to blow Jack out of the water with this performance. Lets see if actuallyseeing the movie changes my opinion.

You are right Gecko, better thinking coming from a lizard than those melancholic bozos above. After all im the lizard king, LOL. Nicholson is crazy as he is in real life, for Ledger, this is his first villain, cmon, 10 things I hate about u? Brokeback mountain? Why do u melancholic clowns suppose we never watched the original Batman? I had that movie for VHS and Batman Returns as well, I must have seeing them both 100 times each, so based on that, I think I can truly say, Ledger took it to the limit
