When placing a wager in baseball the biggest factor has to be the starting pitcher and other then obvious talents going tonight like Halladay and Haren, you can still find bargains, you just have to be able to ignore the warts. The only way to do that is to look for efficiency. Tonight's starter for the Twins, St Paul native Glen Perkins fits in that description. Perkins is a young guy but he is very poised and has outstanding stuff. Perkins isnt your typical soft tossing lefty as his fastball sits in the low 90's but does crank it up to 95-96mph when needed. What are the warts then, right? There is only one really, and to me its laughable... he only has 50 K's in 96 innings, not stuff that gets you put on sportscenter or added to fantasy teams, thus the relative obscurity. Sure 50 strikeouts isnt much to rave about but his 25 BB's is. Only averaging a walk every four innings would be outstanding if not for every other starter in the Twins rotation doing the same thing, but its still something you can appreciate (is it any wonder how they are in first place?)

Seattle does hit leftys harder and the meat of the order are good fastball hitters, but in my opinion Perkins has the best change on the staff and he also sneaks in a nasty deuce that he can throw to both leftys and rightys - I think he should be able to keep the Mariners (for the most part) off balance. Perkins gives up a but more hits then you would like to see and these first games on the west coast can be tricky, but the Twins just have to much at stake. Perkins counterpart tonight is coming off back to back Miguel Batista quality starts where he allowed no more then 2 runs in each, but this is the same guy with a 6.43 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. He walks more then he strikes out and he has an ERA over 8.00 at Safeco, witch is a pitchers park. I have a sneaking suspicion that the other shoe drops tonight and the Twins light him up a bit. Lets take the better pitcher and the better lineup and the better bullpen at a small price all beit on the raod in what looks to be a trap game.
