Just seems like it would be pretty easy. For ex....A college basketball player could have someone place his bets for him and single handedly effect the spread. Wouldnt even have to be a star that plays 40 min a game. A kid that plays 15-20 min with no chance at pros, could effect a game by say 6-10 points pretty easily. Miss shots, fouls, turnovers, etc.

Thoughts?

I know it happens especially at big schools where thre are prolly multiple books but you would think that more than half the games arent on the level.

Anyone have any stories saved from point shaving or any personal stories?

Obviously, if there are large and unusual wagers on any event, Vegas is going to investigate. If this pattern continues, a legal investigation is almost a certainty. By looking at game film, it won't be hard to see a pattern of point shaving.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I am saying it's not very easy to pull off on a regular basis.

One game here or there, yeah, it can happen.

Ex-player charged in Toledo point-shaving conspiracy

Associated Press

Updated: August 6, 2008, 6:50 PM ET

TOLEDO, Ohio -- A former University of Toledo basketball player has been charged with fixing games, according to a federal indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Sammy Villegas, who played for four years at Toledo, is accused of shaving points in games during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons.

Villegas, a guard who finished his career in 2006, also paid money to another player who took part in the point-shaving scheme, prosecutors said.

The other player was not charged or named in the indictment, which was filed June 30.

Villegas was charged with conspiracy to influence sports contests by bribery and received money and other gifts in exchange for fixing games, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors also didn't name who paid the players. Villegas traveled to Michigan several times to meet with another participant in the scheme, the indictment said.

He intentionally missed two free throws in a game against Central Michigan in 2006, the indictment said.

When I was a teenager I hung around with a a circle of friends.

One of my friends in the circle's older brother was the starting goalie for the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

I'm not going to say what years, for obvious reason.

But I digress, one afternoon, my friends brother was home and we had a game of street hockey, my friends brother was unbelievable, could stop any shot from any angle anywhere.

He gave me the street hockey puck, and said, "here Billy, take a slap shot, point blank range".

He opened his pads no more than a 1/4 inch, puck strikes nothing but net, right through the five hole.

He says to me "that, my friend is how you control a puck line"
(meaning gambling)

25 odd years later, I still remember his words.

You guy's and your grassy knoll stories.

OK it happens, has happened and will happen.

But being prevalent, really don't think so for one reason and that is because lose lips sink ships.

It would come out years later just like this Toledo crap has come out.

keep living in fantasyland. Its truly amazing how many people in this world dont have a clue as to how this world operates.
Maybe 2-3 percent of all college basketball players will ever get an nba paycheck, so if you think those other 98 percent of players in college arent looking for ways to create their own nest egg before leaving college, then you my friend are friggin clueless. The majority of kids in todays society, donot want to work for a paycheck and just want fast easy cash. How much easier could it get for these kids, then shaving points in a silly basketball game? This is happening alot more then anybody will ever imagine. Only reason it doesnt get exposed more is because all these leagues need to protect the game. Could you imagine if david stern announced that all the refs in the league have been cheating? Kiss the nba goodbye. Nobody would watch or showup at the games. Same thing in college sports. They are never going to say that point shaving is happening all the time. It would be the kiss of death.
Wakeup badco and start paying attention to how the world works.

Heres another fact. Everybody thinks that if this was happening alot, then we would all find out about it, because as one poster says loose lips sink ships. Well thats not totally true and in fact lots of secrets never get out. Look at the ref who got caught cheating. He only got caught by accident due to the feds working on another case or elese this guy would have still been in the league doing business everyday.
Look at all the people who work at area 51. How come none of the people after all these years, have said what goes on at that place?
Its because people can keep secrets.
These college kids want to build up their nest egg and certainly dont want to tell people about it.

wow if you cant figure that one on your own, you know nothing about gambling. Worth the risk????????? lmfaoooooooo kids today do alot riskier to make money then shave some points in a college basketball game. The games that are really easy to sgave points in are games when one team is a huge favorite, they can still win the game and stay under the number easily.
I really would love to live in the world some of you live in where everything is so honest.
PEOPLE + MONEY + GREED = CORRUPTION Its been this way since we have been on this planet and its only getting worse every year.

CD329 is absolutely right.

Have you ever seen the show Masterminds. They talk about crooks and their crime and how they got caught. They don't have show about the guys who didn't get caught. Whenever money is involved corruption and greed are right behind.

The only difficulty is making it appear that you are not trying to miss a FT or something to that effect. If you are the point guard, it is very easy to throw the ball away and make it look legit.

You can unload $20K (arbitrary number) on game at various books of shore and in Vegas without drawing red flags.

exactly:toast: alot of people just dont understand how this world operates and how money controls every aspect of our lives. People for some reason want to believe athletes would never be corrupt, but truth is they are just like everybody else in this world and at the end of the day, it matters how they put the food on the table.
