The Boston Red Sox have claimed Padres right fielder Brian Giles off the waiver wire, if only to keep him away from the two teams with better records in the American League. Thus, Boston entered a 48-hour period in which the Sox have exclusive rights to try to work out a trade with San Diego.

Giles has 10 teams listed in a no-trade clause that he can't go to, and Boston is one of them. He gets $2 mil I believe if he waives that clause. He's also a free agent at the end of the yr. Giles plays his ass off. He deserves a title shot

This would have been a story in 2001, Now Giles is nothing more than a bench player on a good team.

Zero pop/speed from an outfielder is bench material

Giles had his shot at a title, when he came to SD he was the one piece they thougt would get them deep into October. Ironically they gave up Jason Bay to get him. Always thought that was a stupid deal. Argued on air about that on Padre talk and every caller thought I was wrong.

Few have pop playing half their games at Petco. Giles hit 12 HRs in 264 AB away from home last season. Also sporting a .391 OBP this season. Still a useful player.

I guess it took awhile to confirm you were right, probably got blasted on the air a bunch back then

Saw him up close once shirtless in P-Burgh....acne everywhere and a bad receeding hairline.

Giles likely to veto Boston deal, wants to remain with Padres

Brian Giles has indicated that he will block a waiver deal that would have sent him to the Boston Red Sox, and an hour before the deadline for making a deal between the Padres and Red Sox, it appeared he would remain with San Diego.

Giles, 37, was claimed on waivers by the Red Sox, and Boston and San Diego had 48 hours to make a deal. But the Red Sox are one of eight teams listed in the limited no-trade provision in his contract, and Giles has the right to veto any deal.
The Red Sox and Padres had been hopeful that a deal could be worked out -- Boston wanted Giles because of the offensive depth he would provide, and San Diego could have saved at least $6 million if the All-Star right fielder had accepted the move.
At 12:25 p.m. ET Friday, there was still about an hour in which Giles had the opportunity to change his mind, but it did not appear that would happen.

Giles is hitting .296 with a .391 on-base percentage, 61 walks and 44 strikeouts this season.

Brian Giles has 8-10 teams after him?

Former San Diego Padres outfielder Brian Giles hasn't played in the majors since June 18 but his agent is claiming that there are eight to 10 teams clamoring for his services, according to the North County Times. Those teams must be wanting to give Giles a minor-league deal. After all, the 39-year-old only hit .191 last year in the 61 games he was limited to due to a knee injury. He has a 15-year career average of .291 and has hit 287 homers over that time, though only two of them last year.
His agent is saying that he'll make a deal before week's end. If the knee still gives him issues in spring training, the rumor is that Giles will then go ahead and retire.
