Let me get this straight. They intentionally walked Josh Hamilton with the bases loaded?

I dont care if the rays won or not, just plain dumb to bring the go ahead run up to the plate.

josh hamilton is a damn good player. but there isnt a single guy in today's mlb that is deserving of an intentional walk with the bases loaded.

when bonds got the intentional pass with the bases loaded 5-6 years ago or whenever it was, he was such a dangerous hitter that you could honestly justify the move. he was so locked in during that stretch that the IBB made sense.

but walking hamilton to bring a guy (byrd) to the plate that who earlier in the week had a 16/23 stretch explains why the rays are the rays .... and not the red sox.

Yeah that brilliant move of pinch hitting Veritech to try and get him out of his slump with runners in scoring position vs the Yanks was brilliant coaching. Agree walking JH was not smart but Dumb coaching mistakes are made every day. Also, guess what, it worked. Bet Francione wished his pig brain move worked.

the point is that you will never see the red sox (or yankees for that matter) giving the IBB with the bases loaded. papelbon would just as soon walk off the mound and quit baseball before going for that. the odds of a grand slam are incredibly small. also, youre not talking about walking a guy to get to a pinch hitter in a pitchers park. youre bringing a guy to the plate who was 16/23 earlier in the week and hitting in texas. btw, a worst-case hamilton grand slam ties the game and you are still playing baseball.

joe maddon deserves credit for what he's done with Tampa this year, but cmon. Byrd isn't no .220 hitter or some minor league callup. even though he didn't come through at that AB, hes more than capable of an extra base hit and then all hell would've broke loose

Yeah can you imagine if Byrd had come through with a slam? Madden would be deservedly getting grief for a long time over that move. I had the Rays and was extremely worried that it was going to be one of those bad beats.

and first thing i thought of was Byrd hit a grandslam walk off just 2 or 3 weeks ago vs the Yanks. i know because i had Rangers on the alternate RL and got the improbable win. wish he did it again last night

it was retarded. to sit back in hindsight and say it was the right move is really dumb.

nobody deserves to be IBB with the bases loaded. also, had Byrd gotten a hit, yet alone a grandslam, Madden would be slammed big time.

well, they won the game. its just as stupid to say "what if this or that happened"

did he win? yes. they are in 1st place. doesnt seem to dumb to me.

i didn't bet on the game, so who won or the lines are irrelevant to me.

i'm just posting my thoughts on the matter. hindsight is 20/20 and they won, had the outcome been different, i can gurantee you that you wouldn't be taking the side you are.

however, it wasn't the smart thing to do. considering what the guy he decided to pitch to did just a few games previously.

I had under 10- and got screwed with play, however, in retrospect it turned out exactly how Madden planned when he made move, so in this case it was right move. If Hamilton went yard or even got a hit that scored a couple all of the armchair managers would be saying they should have walked him. Bad beat to be sure, and "I" would rather have taken chances with hamilton. Madden won't be 2nd guessed by baseball people, only gamblers
