Thousands turn out for last day at Bay Meadows

SAN MATEO – Bay Meadows was a busy place as thousands of people showed up to see the last day of horse racing at the track.

More than 10,000 people – well above the weekend average of 4,000 – swarmed into the San Mateo track Sunday for the final day of racing.

The 74-year-old race track is due to be torn down to make way for a development project that includes 83 acres of housing, office and retail space.

Bay Meadows has plenty of racing history. It was home to the longest-running stakes event in California – the Bay Meadows Handicap – captured twice by Seabiscuit.

Track officials plan to auction off track memorabilia and equipment during a three-day public auction beginning Aug. 23.

Sad day for racing...been to that track countless times and will miss it...should have torn down Golden Gate instead of Bay Meadows..

Was wondering if anyone has ordered or planned on ordering The Last Train from Bay Meadows? I'm guessing this would be something OldManTed(and any racing fan) would enjoy.

I bet on my first horse race at Bay Meadows many years ago. Some great memories there. I hate to see it go.
