Tonight, I will turn to the Pirates once again this time backing another southpaw in recently promoted Tom Gorzelanny. However, Im going to do this one a bit different then I have before and that is im going to spread out my risk. Im going to split this game in half, half on the RL and half on the ML. If I win both then it only counts as one win. If I lose the ML it will be a push. If I lose both then its only one loss, because after all we are only playing with one unit. This may seem like I don’t have confidence but in reality im just not sure about the Pirates lineup situation as McLouth and Doumit are question marks. If both these guys don’t play I would probably just play the RL as those two are the two best hitters in the lineup.

Tom Gorzelanny. It was July 4th when Gorzo pitch has last game in the major leagues against these same Brewers in this same stadium on the road at Miler Park. It was there Gorzo was pounded for 8 (seven earned) in just under 5 innings (4 and 2/3). Now was that game a result of the Brewers just figuring him out or was it more on Tom Gorzelanny just not having good command? Ill go with the latter as this season Gorzelanny has walked 61 batters to just 54 K's. Mind you, this was a guy who last year struck out 135 and walked 68, still high walk numbers but nothing like he experienced this season. After that start the Pirates sent him down to AAA to work on his mechanics and all he did was compile a 3-1 record with a 2.06 ERA in seven starts and the magic number...walked only four in 35 innings. Yes, i know its AAA but remember, former CY Award winner Roy Halladay was sent down to AAA. This seasons CY Young award winner, Cliff Lee was sent down to AAA at one point even after he won 18 games just two years prior. All this isn’t to suggest Gorzelanny is going to be a CY Young award winner; it is however an indication on how beneficial this can be for guys who are already established.

If you remove Gorzelannys last start vs the Brewers, this is a guy who at that point owned the ‘Crew to start his young career as he was 3-0 with a 3.19 ERA in six starts. This isn’t by accident, because side by side Gorzelanny is much like Cliff Lee, he has front line talent and is capable of dominating hitters especially when he is able to get ahead and throw his slider. Gorzelanny isn’t your typical soft tossing lefty either, as he sits in the 91-95 <st1:stockticker>MPH</st1:stockticker> range. This makes his plus changeup that more effective, but a lot of the trouble he has had with control is a result of throwing his changeup too much and not enough of his fastball, because he lost faith in locating it. I expect to see the mitt pooping tonight and I look for Gorzo to really go after the Brewers hitters. He likely won’t shut them down but I think he will pitch well enough to keep the ‘Bucs in the game.

The Brewers counter with Suppan and Suppan is 10-3 in his career vs the Pirates. Although that appears dominating, as the case with Wins/Losses many times, its not a true reflection of the pitchers performance. Despite winning 10 games vs the Pirates Suppan still has an <st1:stockticker>AER</st1:stockticker> of 4.32, hardly Cy Young like. Case in point his last start vs these Pirates; 3 innings and 6 runs yet he doesn’t get the loss. Suppan is a decent middle of the rotation guy, but hes nothing special. The Pirates should be able to score some runs off him tonight and this should be a closer game then the experts think.

Pittsburgh Pirates (Gorzelanny) ML +230 (.5 Unit)

Pittsburgh Pirates (Gorzelanny) RL +1.5 +105 (.5 Unit)

Played this one before I saw your post. Oh well...it was a fun ride while it lasted, fletch. The Pirates are too fucking pathetic to come back from something like this. Pigs will fly before they make a game of this....
