Giants' Umenyiora requires season-ending knee surgery

Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will have season-ending surgery on his injured left knee.
Umenyiora was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday's preseason game against the New York Jets, and Dr. Russell Warren told the team on Sunday that an MRI found a tear in his lateral meniscus.

Experience: 5

The two-time Pro Bowler will have surgery on Tuesday.
"It was obviously the news that I did not want to hear," coach Tom Coughlin said. "But after listening to the explanation and Dr. Warren's thoughts on it, I am convinced that this is the right procedure and the right way to go."
The normal recovery last four months, Coughlin said, adding that a non-surgical option was not discussed.
The loss is a major one for the Super Bowl champions in the wake of the retirement of seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan a few months ago.
Coughlin said the team is considering all its options when asked whether the Super Bowl champions were interested in luring the 36-year-old out of retirement.
Coughlin recently talked with Strahan about his new career working on Sundays for Fox Sports.
"The only thing I talked with Michael about was his new challenge, moving forward in his new assignment and he was very excited about that," Coughlin said.
Strahan, meanwhile, is currently on vacation and hasn't heard from the Giants. On the possibility he would return to the Giants, Strahan told NFL Network's Adam Schefter: "I haven't heard from anybody else so to say if I would or wouldn't is premature so I'm enjoying my retired life right now."
This is not the first time Umenyiora has required surgery to repair cartilage damage in his left knee. He underwent arthroscopic surgery for the same problem at Troy State.
Umenyiora started all 16 games last season and had 52 tackles and a team-high 13 sacks. He added seven tackles in the Giants' playoff run to the Super Bowl.
The Giants are now a bit thin at defensive end. Justin Tuck has replaced Strahan and New York signed veteran Renaldo Wynn in the offseason.
With Umenyiora out, the Giants have to consider moving strongside linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end. He was switched to linebacker last year so the team could put its best 11 players on the field.
"I haven't had a chance to talk to him so I am not going to comment on that," Coughlin said.

They are done. Losing Strahan was bad enough, now with Usi gone Tuck is going to be double teamed like crazy and the Giants won't have a pass rush which is what won them many games last year. This injury is HUGE.

Strahan looks way to happy being retired to even consider helping them out.

That leaves the door open just a little bit..

I had them finishing last in the East before this injury, and this definitely helps that out. They lost way too much from that defense, and although the offense is solid, it's nothing spectacular that will win you games.

Giants still have a favorable schedule and could finish 8-8/9-7.

Strahan pulling a Favre is the only thing that saves the Giants from a .500 record at best.

Strahan coming back won't even save their season IMO. The guy is still a very good player, but not a top tier DE anymore, and certainly not a guy that will save a teams season. He's one of my favorite players in history, love his attitude and personality, but his best days were behind him and he is smart enough to go out on top. Money won't change his mind because he has plenty of it.

And as for the Giants finishing last, why is that not possible? Cowboys are definitely the most talented team in the NFC, I don't even think Giants fans will argue against that. I have the Redskins as the second best team in the NFC, but I could see why some may not agree with that. I have them going 10-6 though, maybe 11-5 if they get some breaks. Philly and NYG both have some major holes IMO and are both a little overrated. Philly still has holes on defense and a below average OL. They also have below average WR's. McNabb doesn't scare me either so Philly could easily finish last and I wouldn't be surprised. The Giants really just aren't great anywhere on the field though. They no longer have a great DL. They have average LB's and an average secondary. Their offense is again, average. Eli is not a top tier QB YET, but he will be eventually. Jacobs is solid running the ball, but not a game changer. Burress is unpredictable at times and they don't have the best cast around him. They also need Boss to step up this year with no Shockey as a backup plan. I just don't see a very good team when I look at the Giants roster, but I could be wrong.

I will say I would be absolutely SHOCKED if they made the playoffs, and I would be able to back that up with money if anybody was interested.

you should go put money on the redskins +3.5 for season opener but you might as well go to the toilet and flush that money because you're essentially doing that.

the redskins are going to suck next year.

I already have. Obviously you're not confident enough in your Giants to back it up with money that they will make the playoffs.
