BEIJING — NBC’s coverage of the Beijing Olympics is now the most-watched event in U.S. television history, with 211 million viewers for its over-the-air and cable broadcasts entering Sunday night’s Closing Ceremony broadcast.
NBC drew 209 million viewers for its broadcasts from Athens and 200 million for its first 16 days at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
The daily prime-time average Nielsen rating of 16.2 with a 28 share is up 7 percent from 15.2/27 for Athens.
Average viewership is 27.7 million, up from 24.9 million entering the final night at Athens.
Saturday’s broadcast earned a 10.2/19 rating, down from 11.1 million for the same night in Athens.
In Houston, KPRC (Channel 2) had a 9.6 rating and 18 share for an average audience of 196,853 households. david.barron@chron.com

I find this stupid, if there was American Idol on for 2 weeks in a row and on 3 different channels it would be most watched as well

I know London is screwed when it comes to living up to what Beijing did.

Their budget for the 2012 games is a quarter of what Beijing had.

And they have already said since it ended that budget will not increase.
