Jags lineman Richard Collier shot, has life-threatening injuries
<DL class=byline>Tania Ganguli | Sentinel Staff Writer <DD>12:50 PM EDT, September 2, 2008 </DD></DL>JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Richard Collier, the backup left tackle for the Jacksonville Jaguars was shot by an unknown assailant Tuesday morning at approximately 2:50 a.m. in Jacksonville.
Collier had surgery Tuesday morning and is in critical, but stable condition at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center.
"We're shocked and deeply saddened by this morning's news about Richard Collier," team owner Wayne Weaver said. "... The entire Jaguars family is praying for Richard and his family at this time."
Collier was with Kenny Pettway, a defensive lineman whom the Jags cut last week, in a red SUV when attacked. The two were reportedly waiting for two women behind an apartment building.
A police report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office did not identify names, but identified the victim and a witness. When police arrived at the complex, the witness met the reporting officer out front and said "his friend had been shot and was in the rear of the apartment building." The officer saw the victim slumped over in the passenger seat with a serious gunshot wound. No suspects have been identified.
