I think I could possibly do it for 5 minutes in front of a few hundred people ( like a Funnybones), but I'd be dead on the stage after that. I only have 5 minutes of material, and that's about it.

I go to these places often, and enjoy it. I'd clearly be the MC type, with my five minutes on stage, crack a few jokes, and done. I'd love to try it.

I have a lot of respect for a guy that can do it for 45 minutes +.

2 things here. Doug, no way in hell you could do stand up comedy for 5 minutes.

secondly, a guy who can do it for 45 minutes, can do it for a reason. once you get off on the right foot and get people into it and make them laugh, you've in essence got them in the palm of your hand and even some of your shitty jokes will make them chuckle because you've set the tone.

Improv comedy is a good way to start getting used to the stage.. this was the route a friend of a friend took and can proudly say that he was recently on Letterman.
He's a situational comic from a small community.

I have a joke, needs a chalkboard prop behind me, that alone could be 3 minutes of my 5 minutes.... it's old as shit, but few know it... always a hit, whenever I pull it out !

I agree that I'm dead after 5 minutes, and need a reliever. I think I have 5 minutes in me, then I'm toast.

300 seconds in front of 200 people that aren't expecting you to be very good anyway.... I might be able to work up that much, but not much more, and I need my chalkboard prop. I would succeed with that joke , but little left in the tank. after that... 5 minute, one good joke Joke Doug !

I could do this SHIT:

Folks ,Put your hands together... for Joe Smith from Boston, remember to tip your cocktail waitresses, enjoy the show...

then introduce the Headliner after Joe does his 20 minutes.

I could do that crap, even be the first one on ( maybe?) The Crowd would expect my act to suck.

Maybe I should tend bar or bounce, instead ? :missingte

I have an awesome bit, I could perform, but no follow-up, I'm limited, and I know it. I'd have 200 people in stitches with it, it cracks everybody up, buts it is all I have, and I know it, but it's awesome.

5 minutes is a long ass time on stage-especially solo

I'll pass!

That's all I got in me, never performed live before. I'd do 5 minutes if offered,Terry ! No doubt that would be a long 5 minutes, but I'd do it...and likely fail like a Lazerwager, but I'd do it, given the chance. It would be Hell. I'd need my trademark joke and prop, for sure.

I have one awesome (visual) joke in me, that's probably 2.5 minutes, maybe 3 (tops). I'm way dead after I deliver that one., get me off the stage.

Was at a poker table with Steve Danneman, he had the table in tears for an hour straight. It depends what level of funny you want to get to.

One of the keys to successful standup is to find a theme and elaborate on it.
One good theme can produce at least 20 good one-lines, produce 4 or 5 good themes, you can fill a 45 minute spot.

Case in point, from one of todays greatest standup comics.

djmatt, your friend's very good! :103631605 Love that deadpan stuff. I can't even imagine how nerve-wracking it must've been to do the Letterman stint.
