Can someone explain the call when Culter lost the ball?

Can someone explain to me why that ball was placed at the 10? If it was a fumble, the Chargers recover and win the game. If it is an incomplete pass should it not have been placed at the 3?

Does what the ref called on the field have something to do with where the ball was placed?

Or was it just a bad call?

The Chargers recovered the fumble. Why did Denver get the ball? It makes zero sense.

If I was the Chargers, I would have protested the game. There is no way that the protest would lose.

Assuming that it was a fumble, the CHARGERS RECOVERED.

The ref blew the whistle and is down where it was fumbled which is the 10 yard line.

The initial whistle was a "bad call". But the final decision was perfect under existing rules.

Much like the non-reviewable INT by Champ when the replay equipment wasn't working.

this is from nfl.com

(1:17) 6-J.Cutler pass incomplete short right to 28-M.Pittman. The Replay Assistant challenged the fumble ruling, and the play was REVERSED. 6-J.Cutler sacked at SD 10 for -9 yards (Team). FUMBLES (Team), declared dead at SD 10.

That makes no sense. If the play was reversed, it should have been reversed to an INCOMPLETE PASS putting the ball at the three yard line.

Hackaley blew the whistle as soon as Cutler fumbled, he ruled it an incomplete pass. He then admits he made a mistake, and went to the rule book that if a ball is fumbled and whistled dead, then the ball gets spotted at the place of the fumble. If dickhead didnt blow the whistle, Chargers get the ball and win the game. He F*cked up by blowing the whistle immediately, him and crew both need to be suspended and disciplened for that inept bullshit!

key point is the whistle. because once the play is whistled dead then everyone theoretically should stop playing. Since they blew the whistle before the ball was possessed by SD, then when the play was reversed it had to go to the team who originally possessed the ball because you don't actually know who would of recovered after the play was blown dead. play was reversed, ball placed at the spot where the ball hit the ground after the fumble, denver ball

San Diego snake bit.

Bad beat for San Diego no doubt on both the clock not working non turnover and the quick whistle on the fumble by Cutler by a veteran official like referee Ed Hochuli who blew his whistle, apparently ruling it an incomplete pass. After a review, Hochuli said that the Broncos would keep the ball because his whistle had blown the play dead. The Broncos got the ball at the 10-yard line, where it had hit the grass out of Cutler's hands. The fumble had there been no quick whistle would have given San Diego the ball and the game with less than a minute to play and no Dever timeouts left.
