My friends are stressing me out with all this WAMU talk, so I think I'm going to close my account. But where do I move my money to? I've heard BofA has a lot of hidden fees, so that's something I obviously want to avoid. Any good experiences with banks welcome.

I still have money at WAMU but I did take out anything that would not be insured - I just can't imagine all the WAMU banking centers are going to be Subways, Radio Shacks, Papa Johns, etc.

I've heard plenty of horror stories about BofA.

It really depends on what banks you have in your area & who's convenient for you, but I've turned a lot of people on to Compass bank & have heard nothing but good things about them.

I used to think that a bank was just another bank, but these guys are great.

BOA had nothing but troubles

deposited cash 3 times - they put the money in someone elses account - lucky I kept the receipts so made it easier.

someone bounced a check to me for 5k and they charged me roughly 570 dollars in total - as that bounced smaller checks and racked up fees. i didnt send out checks until the account had said the money was available - boy oh boy was that a pain. CS only has authority up to 100-200 so had to go to state manager - personal view they suck

have a smaller bank now - walk in never a line - CS like you wouldnt believe, clear checks in 24 hours cant say enough good things abt that bank.

You should look at online banks. I've had an account with ING Direct for almost 3 years now and its been flawless. You still need a "real world" account to fully use ING, but you can keep a minimal amount in there.

I have been with Watch-overya forever. No issues. No monthly service fees, free checks, great CSR etc. Highly recommend.

To anyone who has overdraft issues from time to time go to your bank and open an overdraft protection account or set up auto withdrawl from savings to avoid those crazy overdraft fees. My 2 cents:toast:

I have used two local family owned banks since the early 80s. Oklahoma went through what most of the country is going through now(bad loans), when they made some of the most ridiculous energy loans(see Penn Square Bank), Ever! One time on a plane ride home from Vegas, a famous loan officer(went to the joint) offered me a $200,000 line of credit on a cocktail napkin. I'm sure their will be a few books written about some of these banks and hedge funds that go under.

Yes BOA is horrible. Think about it, they are the biggest bank, that means they will pretty much hire anyone to work for them (think walmart) I have BOA , Fidelity online, etrade online and my Local credit union. The CU is the best in fees and customer service wise. Plus I like the fact that I can walk in and speak with the same person that opened my account 2 years ago.

My own bank (Bank Of Scotland LSE:HBOS) plunged 52% today at one point. They're fucked, it's over for them now. I'm still exposed over the FSA insurance limit but nothing like I was 6 months ago. LLoyds looking to salvage them.

I must be the exception to the rule. Have been with B of A more than 30 years, back when they were called Nation's Bank. Never a problem. As for fees, direct deposit, eliminates checking fees. Except you must buy checks that you use. Free on line banking, bill pay. Maybe have just been lucky.

I believe you are talking about Hudson United Bank. The new name here is TD Banknorth, now they merged with commerce Bank. Not sure if they are going to changes the names of each bank or keep them the same. Both are good options.

US bank safest big bank out there

shitty rates on CDs but you can sleep at night

basically the higher the CD rates you can get right now the more trouble you know they are in

US bank at like 3% while WaMu at 5%

WaMu going under seems pretty inevitable

they have soooo many bad mortgages on the books

likely money will be locked up for some time as FDIC tries to figure it all out

whatever you do make sure you at least are under the 100,000 FDIC insurance limit
