I've said this and have thought this same thing many, many times before since the two-three-two home field game rotation was introduced in a best of seven series, that being that it bodes very well in significant favor of the home field club. Both or either the Tampa Bay Devil Rays or Philadelphia Phillies can, hopefully at least, split (if not sweep) the first two games at home and still be in the driver's seat heading to Boston and Los Angeles respectively for the middle three games of the best of seven series.
At Boston or LA the visiting teams can either take one of the three or hopefully take two of the three games and head home either down 3-2 or up 3-2 in the best of seven NL or ALCS. With a 3-2 advantage coming home, the Rays or Phillies would need but one of the two games to capture the title or at the worst, need both games to capture the series.
Now it's no secret that a two-game series at home in baseball is much easier to sweep than a three-game series and therein lies the advantage for the home field team in this game rotation setup. Both Tampa and Philadelphia get a pair of two-game sets at home while the Red Sox and Dodgers have to deal with the three-game series in the middle and that's where the catch lies.
The previous setup, currently used in the NHL, had each team playing a pair of two-game series on each others home field before going to a one-one-one scenario to conclude the best of seven.
Agree or disagree, it's anyone's perogative but the fact of the matter is this advantage is quite clear and sits with the two teams hosting the pair of two-game series in the best of seven NL and ALCS.
