Just wondering if anyone had any projects going or completed. My buddy is working on an older Mustang he got. Body is perfect but the engine needs some work but all in all it's in really good condition.

Any good/bad stories about this type of stuff?

Jake.. it's fine. You do not have to disguise your sexual identity here with "car project" topics.

Just make sure he has a subscription to Hemmings Motor News for parts and don't ever expect to make money on it and he'll be fine.

Unless he's really connected with some guys in the know don't be going hogwild paying high ass prices for Mustang parts because they are "original"........there is more knock off parts out there that people try to get big money for by saying they came off grandmas ol 64 when they really came straight outa J.C. Whitney...

Jake, you're way to young to be having a mid life crisis & I don't think you have the money to piss away on a project like this. Run, don't walk from the idea.

To do it right will cost you as much as a decent house. Nothing but an absolute money pit.

Go for it. I have restored a few and know the money and patience it takes. Web helps tons and it is easy to connect with others who know your car and can guide you toward resources. Absolute first rule is don't do it for money because you will quit early to escape freezing December garage floor. I restored MGs and Alfas and the burning energy was that I liked looking at em and driving em. I have half of a BMW marine engine sitting on my kitchen counter right now (cracked exhaust manifold) because I love the boat and because it is my own little rescue battle with world stock market forces. Not preaching, but my advice is to honestly understand your abilities, resources and motivations, and once you decide to restore, never turn back. Ninety percent of amateur restoration success is determination.

I think you have ask yourself.... "Self, why do I want to do this ?

Maybe you inherited Grandpa's 67 El Camino, and want it to look like this:

Cool if you have the money and time !

If you want it as a daily driver, just buy a new Toyota Tacoma, instead, way cheaper, and a much safer and just better car/truck.

I like old classic cars, but newer cars are just superior. I'd have a fleet of classic cars if I was filthy rich, and some new ones.

This is not an idea that is going to happen anytime soon but my dad's old truck is still at the homestead so I was considering doing it at one point or another. Runs okay but has some engine issues, body is just fine though with a paint job. Restored it would look like this...

Is that a 1966 ?

I used to have a 66 Ford truck when I lived in Vegas, bought it cheap, used it as work truck ( in the late 80's), beat the piss out of it, drove it 100 miles a day. Wish I had it back. No rust on it at all, clutch linkage used to break often, but other than that, a great truck.

Problem is restoring it properly ( frame-up) costs way more than a nice new truck with safety features,AC,CD player, etc.

I'd leave it as a hobby for the wealthy.

This is a car I'd consider (DMC-12), you can still build one with all new parts, that are warehoused, for maybe 40k.
