Organization feeling out trade offers for Padres staff ace Peavy

Kevin Towers said he would be "shirking his duties" if he did not find out Jake Peavy's trade value.
Kevin Towers said last month it would be “very, very difficult to trade Jake Peavy” because of the ace pitcher's value to the Padres. Nonetheless, the general manager is open to trade offers for Peavy, who has guaranteed salaries of $11 million, $15 million, $16 million and $17 million over the next four years.
If the Padres decide to trade Peavy, getting full value may be difficult as well if Peavy is unwilling to approve a trade to the American League.
At season's end, Peavy said he would not accept a trade to the American League. Asked recently if that is still true, Peavy said he didn't “want to get into any speculation” on trade scenarios.
His agent, Barry Axelrod, acknowledged that the American League isn't Peavy's first choice.
“Jake has a strong preference to stay in the National League,” Axelrod said. “It is hypothetical, but Jake, by any measure, has had a great deal of success in the National League. He has a comfort level with knowing how to approach hitters here.”
Axelrod said Peavy also considers his hitting ability an advantage in the NL, because he is a better hitter than many opposing pitchers. Peavy batted .265 last season, one year after batting .233.
Peavy isn't the only pitcher who prefers the NL, which exempts the designated hitter. Greg Maddux, a friend and mentor of Peavy's, often has quipped that he stayed in the NL for his entire career because he's “not stupid.”
Axelrod made one concrete stipulation to any trade scenarios: “Jake would only approve a trade to a team with a solid chance of winning and a winning tradition. Those teams in the National League may be in locations that are more acceptable, or would be.”
He said “the ability or opportunity to win is very important to Jake, and hopefully some sort of coincidence with his and his family's lifestyle.”
Among the cities Axelrod mentioned were Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and St. Louis.
Peavy and his wife Katie have three boys, one an infant, and this year moved into a home north of San Diego. Because of Peavy's intention to keep his family in San Diego for at least part of the year, Axelrod acknowledged that the Anaheim Angels are one AL club that would draw extra consideration.
But the Padres are first in his heart, said Peavy, though less so if it means more seasons resembling this year's 63-99 clunker.
“My first choice is to be in San Diego, with a team that is going to do everything they can do to be a postseason team and try to win a World Series,” said Peavy, who received full no-trade powers as part of the three-year, $52 million extension signed last December.
“That's first and foremost what I want to happen, and why I signed this contract – because I love San Diego,” he said.
Said Axelrod, a self-described Padres fan who is based in Encinitas: “If there's a commitment to fix it, and believe me, Jake is watching carefully, more on the short term than the long term, then I think Jake would love to be here. If this is a true rebuilding situation, it doesn't make sense to Jake or the Padres for him to be here.”
Asked if a potential trade partner would need to guarantee Peavy's $22 million option for 2013, which carries a $4 million buyout, Axelrod didn't give a specific answer.
“One of the reasons for that (no-trade clause) is we took an under-market deal to stay here, and the reason we did that was to stay here,” Axelrod said. “A $52 million extension or in the range of a $70 million deal for five years in San Diego is a different configuration than that same type of deal in a New York or Boston.”
Making use of no-trade powers the Padres and Axelrod had negotiated, slugger Phil Nevin, an Axelrod client, vetoed trades to the Reds and Orioles earlier this decade. Padres right fielder Brian Giles, exercising partial no-trade powers that the Padres and agent Joe Bick had negotiated, vetoed a trade to the Red Sox in August. Giles, 37, would regain full no-trade powers if the Padres picked up his $9 million option for 2009, which Towers again said is likely to happen.

Lol. I have been saying this over and over again. Peavy is really an overrated pitcher b/c most of his 1 and 2 run games he gives up are at friendly Petco Park. He still does good at SF and Dodger Stadium b/c those are pitcher ballparks.

Do you guys see what happens to this guy when he pitches at a non pitcher ballpark or a decent team? This guy gets lit up. When he plays the Cubbies, Yankees , he gets exposed. Yet when he pitches against the Pirates, all is good.

I can't stop :lolBIG: right now when he said he refuses to go to the American League. Umm why is that Peavy? Is it b/c you will be exposed and not get your E.R.A under 3.5? I am damn sure this guy if he pitched in the A.L his ERA will be in the 4 and a bit higher. This guy is nothing special when he goes to pitcher anywhere but that pathetic Petco Park crap where even crap pitchers can give up only 2 runs like Zito.

You go put an ACE and have them pitch in San Diego and although they might get low run support, that pitchers ERA will certainly be 3 and under just like Peavy. Imagine Zambrano or Santana... their ERA might be a 2. Peavy had it easy this whole time when ppl keep saying he is the best pitcher in baseball. Look at his damn schedule and see that he pitches against those Giants, Dodgers and Pirates. But when he pitches against Zona and Cubbies, he gets exposed.

He is an average pitcher that many believe is the top 3 pitcher in baseball b/c of his E.R.A. But if you really look at who he pitches and that the majority of games are at Petco, Dodger Stadium, and that Giants stadium which is maybe the 2nd or 3rd pitcher friendly ballpark, no WONDER why his E.R.A is so good. Last years so called Cy young winner went to Colorado and gave up what 6 runs? Yes, thats what happens when you are not at Petco.

I don't want to sound like I hate this guy so much which I do sound like it right now but he is an AVERAGE pitcher. Why do you guys think he says don't send me to the A.L? Because he knows himself he will not be even a top 5 starter in the A.L and knows he SUCKS against good teams and NO team in the A.L has a pitcher friendly ballpark besides maybe Seattle and Oakland.

Top 3 pitcher in the league without a doubt. Any team would love to have this guy. No way in hell SD accepts Fielder for him. Not even close to enough. It would have to be Fielder, and Parra or something like that. Maybe even Fielder and Gallardo.

Look at Peavys stats this year when he pitched away from Petco Park. Also look at those games where he pitched against good teams like Cubbies and Yankees and Arizona where he was NOT at Petco Park.

Then look at the games where he pitched against those crappy Dodgers earlier in the season and against those SF Giants. Imagine if Johan Santana or Zambrano got to pitch those teams in this year, there might even be some shutouts.

Peavy KNOWS himself that if he goes to the A.L he will be exposed. Yes any team will like to have him but he is not going to be the ACE of the team if he goes to the A.L unless he goes to Oakland where it is pitcher ballpark friendly.

You kept bringing this up during the year and I showed you all his road stats from previous years. They are just as good as his home stats for the most part, which is better than pretty much every other pitcher in the league. The only pitchers I would even consider taking over Peavy are Santana and Halladay.

Peavy is one of, if not THE best pitcher in the MLB. I'm sorry you fail to realize it, but that is a fact.

Milwaukee would never send Prince Fielder for an injury-prone pitcher.

Do you think his E.R.A will be under a 3 if he goes to the A.L? There is a reason why most pitchers who have low E.R.As and most of them are in the N.L. Weaker lineups and no DH.

You also fail to realize Manny is the the best hitter in baseball and even 2 posters afterwards agreed that it is Manny. Arod is the best all around player. Now THAT is a fact.

Even though your arguments that his numbers are inflated have some grounds to it, you completely lose credibility when you call Peavy an "average pitcher". It is just an absurd statement, he is an upper tier pitcher no matter where he pitches.
