Oh boy, should the Boston Red Sox win game seven against the Tampa Bay Rays to advance to the World Series, the memories of game five at Fenway will be forever lodged in the minds of the Rays and their fans. Nine outs away and holding a 7-0 lead, both combined to grant Tampa Bay an opportunity to play in their first Fall Classic.
The bottom line was simply that nobody told the Boston Red Sox what inning it was, what the deficit was or even what game it was for that matter. A club that had won the Series one year ago, a lineup loaded with veterans and that was and is exactly what the Devil Rays are missing---that leadership quality essential and present on most championship clubs.
The series is now headed for game seven as I finish up this post and I honestly don't believe there's a trace of doubt on any one Boston player that they'll be heading home tomorrow night on the plane with the AL trophy and an opportunity to win back to back World Series. On the other hand, one has to believe or think that the Rays won't get a lot of sleep tonight and if they do, they'll have constant nightmares of game five at Fenway the other night, nightmares of blowing a seven-run lead with nine outs away from advancing to the Series against the Phillies. Ah yeah, if only and finally what could have been.
As for me, I'm just wondering what follows a GOM and then a GOY. I'll bet Paige knows the answer.
