Anyone ever give up everything for a job?

Was at home in the midwest looking for a job about 6 months ago. I got offered a job 18 hours away from home working construction as a superintendent and I took the job.

I gave up my house(Renting it out now), family, friends, girlfriend for over a year, dog(Left with my parents), hunting(Avid hunter for 20 years, this is the first year I have missed opening day since I was 3), Softball(Played on 4 seperate softball teams, 1 team that took me years to finally get on).

Basically I find myself asking the question if it is even worth it. I am told I will be here until May on this job and then after that I don't know. I am completely depressed out here in this town. Going from having all of that to absolutely nothing has been really tough on me.

Have any of you been through something like this? How did it end up?

Thats what I was thinking.

I have been back once in almost 5 months, but I am going back for Thanksgiving. It's just not the same though I guess.

Worst that could happen is I'm miserable I guess. Sometimes I just think about the fact that if you are miserable in life then you need to do something to fix it. You only get one life, but this is a job for my future which keeps me here. The fact that maybe a couple miserable years could lead me to a great carer.

I agree with much of this post.

Seems a rather distant memory, but along with the NYC-born SheBar, I left 37 years of DFW Texas for her to take a job offer in Florida late 1997. (Tallahassee). As a lawn/garden service guy, I just loaded up my tools and machines and figured I could always go back to DFW a year or more later if I didn't like it.

Six months later we moved down to Tampa Bay area and now it's ten years after that.

Visited DFW a half dozen times between 2005-7 and though they were good trips, I can't imagine going back now.

IK6, it reads as if one component in your current depression is a lack of close friends and/or romance.

Getting out into your new community by getting involved in volunteer service work could help you meet new people and also give you an increased feeling of good worth living there.

A lot depends on where you're living, but in most areas with populations of 100K or more, there's no shortage of service opportunities.

In my case, upon arriving in TBay area, I immediately began working with local drug treatment and recovery groups. This helped me get to know more people in the community who are caring enough to help others and it also educated me a lot about the area and the people who live here.

PM me for some more direct suggestions based on where you're living and on what areas you might be best able to offer service.

Unfortunately I have no idea where I would find time. I work 75 hours a week and work out 1 hour a day. After that my time is eating/shower/sleep.

I have a few friends I have met here at work, but it's just not the same.

People are losing jobs they've had for 20+ years, there are homeless epidemics in many major cities.. Millions of people are going to lose their homes in 2009..

You have it good.. Stop complaining.

Some people love the gypsy life others can't stand it. Money is good and the lay offs are shorter.

If you're talking about giving up things like honor, integrity and so on, maybe TinCo can chime in on the topic. Sure was different before he became a mod. I think life is about balance, I can't see giving up "everything" for a job. Sacrifices? Sure. Everything? No.
