The Oakland A’s have agreed in principle to acquiring Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday for three players, according to a source familiar with those discussions.
The source said the A’s are possibly sending closer Huston Street, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and starting pitcher Greg Smith to the Rockies.

A’s general manager Billy Beane, who gathered more than a dozen prospects during recent sell-offs of Dan Haren, Rich Harden, Joe Blanton and Nick Swisher, refused to comment Monday. But it appears he is ready to cash in on some of those hauls with Holliday, a great offensive player who could be a free agent after next season. Holliday also could be traded to a third team for more prospects.

Holliday spoke in the morning with Beane and assistant GM David Forst, according to a source, and now the A’s and Rockies must wait on physicals

Bad trade for Oakland. I'm very surprised because they are typically on the other end of these type of deals and almost always win the trades, but this one they lost big time unless they can somehow sign Holliday longterm. If they have him for one season they just lost a closer, a decent pitching prospect and a very good young hitter for pretty much nothing. Now, they might try to trade Holliday at the deadline if they can get a lot, but I can't see them getting more than they just gave up. Gonzalez is going to be very good.

wow...we see this way differently.......you are talkin about an mvp caliber 5 tool player.....

1. whatever the phillies werent willing to spend here to get him...they will pay double that if the mets sign manny, and phillies are looking for help at the trade deadline......

2.This was a huge boneheaded move by a sleeping Phillies management hung over from the WS....they wanted him in september...and are gonna pay someone with the money they dont give burrelll.......this was the guy.....and now the price will double or even triple at the trade deadline.....

3. If it was boneheaded by philly to not act, its twice as boneheaded by rockies for letting him go so cheaply....they basically gave the best bargaining chip at trade deadline to someone else, for a closer who averages 8 blown saves a year, and the gonzalez kid.

4)Billy Bean may not have shown the ability to put together a team to wina championship...but hes so talented at driving down the street and taking someone vintage stamp collection off them for a dollar fifty, and selling it around the corner for 100 bucks......He shoulda been wearing a ski mask here, with rockies management hands in the air.

Some teams need pitching at the deadline, and pitching wins championships....but some teams just need 1 more bat some times, and holliday will be the best in recent memory outside of manny to be available....and in citizens bank park, he could hit .350 and 40 home runs. Phillies coulda gotten this guy and simply given him exactly what they been paying burrell, next year when holliday supposed to get paid, and hes twice the player pat was.........

Im dumbfounded they let him get away. They had to give up victorino and some prospects to get him with fuentes in september and the deal never happened.....(good, cause we love victorino), but at this price? OMG phils coudla kept vic and added holliday and cured the burrell problem, and then who cares if the mets sign manny?

Philly fans loved rowand, hard nosed 100% guy...they woulda loved holliday.

They wanted Victorino or Werth with Carrasco for Holliday which isn't worth it. Victorino is the heart and soul of the team while Werth has shown he can be a fulltime player. Holliday is a FA next year and Boras already said he will test the FA market. With arbitration the Phillies wouldn't have enough money to resign Holliday anyway.

Horrible trade for the A's as there is no way in hell he resigns with them and unless they deal him at the deadline they will only get draft picks which won't be better than the players gave up.

Going for Coors to Oakland watch his numbers decrease big time especially with that shit lineup behind him.

What does it really matter... he will be a free agent next year and the A's will have little to no shot at keeping him. A year from now he'll be trying on a new uniform, one of the five that will actually be able to afford to pay him - Boston, New York, Detroit, New York Mets, and LA Angels. Let's not get too used to him in Chokeland just yet.
