SANTA BARBARA – A brush fire destroyed dozens of homes Thursday in the tony enclave of Montecito, forcing evacuations in the community that has long been a hideaway for celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Rob Lowe.

Flames had engulfed several multimillion-dollar homes and widespread power outages were reported in the area. It was not clear whether any celebrities' homes had burned.

The fire, driven by gusting winds, quickly spread through 300 acres in the foothills five miles south of Santa Barbara, and several fire departments were battling the flames as thick plumes of smoke hovered overhead.
“It looked like lava coming down a volcano,” Leslie Hollis Lopez told The Associated Press as she gathered belongings from her house.

“It's very tenuous. We're hoping the winds are favorable.”

Montecito fire spokeswoman Geri Ventura said she did not know if anyone was injured or how many homes had burned. She said about a quarter of the community of 10,000 people was evacuated and more could be moved out if the fire spreads.

One resident described the area as deserted.

“You can just hear the explosions ... of vehicles, homes,” Michaelo Rosso told KCAL TV as he prepared to leave his home. “It sounds like the Fourth of July out here.”

Gusts were being clocked as high as 70 mph early Thursday night and were expected to remain strong through early Friday morning, according to Bonnie Bartling of the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

Great Scott!

Looks like Christopher Lloyd wasn't so lucky.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/laland/2008/11/christopher-llo.html

Count actor Christopher Lloyd ("Back to the Future") among the Montecito residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the fire.

Times reporter Louis Sahagun, on the scene, reported that "Buildings located on Lloyd's property sustained major fire damage, with ruins continuing to smolder Friday afternoon."
Lloyd is known to personally care for many of the rare plants on the eight-acre grounds, much of which was in ruins today.

The caretaker for the property "fled for his life" in a firestorm Thursday night when the fire erupted, said Lisa Loiacono of Sotheby's International Realty. Loiacono manages the property for Lloyd, who is filming on location in Vancouver and was not in Montecito.

The house, Lloyd's principal residence, was listed for sale in the spring of 2007 at $11.3 million but recently was withdrawn from the market while he made upgrades. He owns a second, smaller, home in Montecito that is still on the market for $3.6 million and was not affected by the blaze.

Lloyd's fire-damaged property is one of Montecito's more unusual homes. The 5,500-square-foot main house has one bedroom, and there is a separate guesthouse. The house was built in 1972 from adobe bricks made on-site. And the living room and bedroom share an outdoor area with a large patio and stone-lined reflecting pool.

They dont need those big homes anyway. I think they should be forced to sell those expensive homes, buy 1 more afforadable for themselves and another 1 for people who dont have 1 at all.......Its only fair. What do these people think? Do they have some kind of right to have wealth? Dumbest thing ive ever heard of......

Absolutely tragic. Been watching this on CNN. They are telling people in the area whose home has not caught on fire to just get out of the area for their own safety, because it's a lost cause.

Didnt CA just have a major fire?! Pretty terrible to see this.

Didn't know Oprah lived out there. She had a huge farm about 25 miles from me. Maybe she can get her friend Obama to bail her out.

Why would they let people bulid homes in some of those places? Can't get help up in those hills.

Half these people will be better off with their homes burned to the ground..............many were facing forclosures.

Heck, I suspect arson.

Anyone can have a home if they work. Unless a person is disabled, why give a home to someone not willig to work?

The Corona fire jumped the 91 Freeway near Green River Road. That will make for an interesting drive to work on Monday as that is the road I take to go to work.

Of course!

I'm guessing arson is up dramatically across this country.

There was a good one in Denver a week or two ago. Absolutely massive palace that had been on the market for (I think) $8 mil.

It was vacant & just happened to spontaneously combust at 5am

Well not good news for my buddy that lives there.
After leaving about 10 voice mail messages, he got back to me about an hour ago.

He has lost everything. His House, 2 cars, priceless items, etc..
But the good news, I guess is that he, his wife and kids are safe. Thank god.

Nobody was home at the time, and he never had a chance to save anything.
In the 20 years that I have known him, I never heard him cry. But on the phone he did, because of Photo's and other Family items.

I told him that as long as you and your Family are safe, that's all that matters.
