Plugged in my shop vac to the plug above the sump pump (over-head plug) when I finished I lazily yanked the cord out of the plug; not knowing that I caught the sump pump cord also. Went the whole night without the sump running and we had a good amount of rain. I go down to feed my dog the next morning and notice the water and swear very loudly. The water only got to about an 9ft by 7ft area (luckily?) I shampooed the shit out of it to no avail. Last night I finally ripped up the carpet and took up the pad (removed the pad only) The carpet can still be salvaged. Anyway, does anyone know of a good antimicrobial product I can use to treat the carpet?

Way to go Hamilton. I think it's safe to say that you lose this title "WNY Sump Pump draining champion"

You took care of the main problem by removing the padding, which will never dry...Obviously make damn sure the carpet is totally dry before replacing the padding if you chose to do so..I have had mold problems after carpet moisture and had great success with safe shield..

Thank Denniz, I soaked the area (painted concrete under the pad) with a 3 to 1 bleach solution. I then vacced that up and and have fans on it with the carpet folded over. Will look at that product you mentioned.

It's a partially finished basement, not a dungeon and the dog only sleeps there. Believe me, my dog is treated like a king.

This pace of this here thread could pick up some speed if we amend the title to just read:

SO, I Was Cleaning Out My Basement Last Week and......

(insert MatchGame bumper music)

I found HARRINGTON back behind the workbench smoking a phattie and trying to fan the smoke out the little side window that's at ground level.

why put carpet in the basement if there is a chance of water damage?

it will always stink down there...

why not just paint the concrete or tile it

I think I could fit a decent sized advertising slogan on that kid's forehead.

#1C, how much per web hit to rent the top half of your avatar image?
