No, he's not, BUT the yankees have all the money they want so they can manage to overpay everyone. They are apparently going after Burnett and Lowe also. Lowe will get hit hard in the AL, but Burnett has nasty stuff. Yanks could be contenders next year with all three. I think Burnett could easily be better than CC next year.

Nah. I think he's worth $110-$120M over 6 years, but 140M seems a little much. That said, the Yankees can afford to overpay everyone vastly.

Ditto to the above post. I hate the Yankees. They should try other team's route. Don't offer players a TON of $$$. They then don't care about winning, all they care about is their big paycheck. Steinbrenner should know this. They have sucked the past few years.

A shame that other teams can't afford every fricken player out there. Brewers offer is a lot to them and chunk change for the Yankees.

Sabathia DOES NOT go to New York. He will either go to Los Angeles or Milwaukee.

He would have signed already if he wanted to go there. If the Dodgers re-sign Manny, then I think Milwaukee gets him.

140 million dollars is an awful lot of money to give to an anti-clutch pitcher in the playoffs.

The price is going to be ridiculous for anyone that wants to back CC this year. He will be around -300 at home vs teams like the O's, and will likely be at least -200 against teams like the Rays and Jays. Going to be good value in fading him.

Ridiculous amount of money though. This guy isn't even a top 5 pitcher, and might not even be top 10. I guess if you have the money though you might as well spend it..

Two back to back CY Young types of years and he's still young. I think he is a top five pitcher and ONLY worth the price if the Yanks land another quality starter or two (Lowe, Sheets, Burnett, etc)

</header><section class="article-content">[h=2]Has CC Sabathia done enough this spring to be in the starting rotation for the New York Yankees to start the season?[/h]<style type="text/css"> .bc-player-default_default{ position: static; } </style>

One of the biggest storylines for the New York Yankees this spring is who will be their fifth starter in the rotation. The locks in the rotation for 2016 were Masahiro Tanaka, Luis Severino, Michael Pineda, and Nathan Eovaldi. The two pitchers that have been pitching for the final spot in the rotation is Sabathia and Nova.
Sabathia certainly came into the spring with the advantage over Nova because of his career resume, and the fact that the Yankees wouldn’t have a left-handed starter in the rotation if Sabathia was moved to the bullpen.

It hasn’t been a great spring for Sabathia, but it appears to be good enough that he will likely be named the fifth starter in the next few days. After allowing two runs in four innings on Tuesday, Yankees manager, Joe Girardi had some nice things to say about the performance.
“I thought today was his best outing,” Joe Girardi said to Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News. “I thought he was pretty good. Some tougher conditions. I thought his cutter was excellent. I thought his changeup got better as the day went on.”
Despite the praise from Girardi, Sabathia has totaled a 5.51 ERA this spring, which is far from good. The main reason why Sabathia will likely be the fifth starter is that Nova has done equally as bad, as he has totaled a 5.50 ERA. <style>.theiaPostSlider_nav._lower ** display: none !important }</style>More All NY Sports: Who is the greatest Yankee of all-time?

“I feel good, man,” Sabathia said to McCarron. “Top to bottom I feel good. I’m confident in what I’m throwing. What I’m trying to do to get hitters out. So, I’ll be ready to go.”
“I’m excited,” Sabathia added to McCarron. “I think all the work in the offseason paid off.” The Yankees can’t have much faith in either Sabathia or Nova heading into the regular season, but it looks like Sabathia will be winning the job by default.

congrats on career win 216

Sabathia (2-2) turned in his best performance of the year at a time when New York desperately needed a victory. He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out six.

Congrats on 100 Yankee WINS!!!The win was Sabathia's 100th in New York pinstripes. He also had 106 victories with Cleveland to join an illustrious list of players that includes Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan and Greg Maddux to win 100 or more with two teams.Oakland scored its only run off Sabathia in the second on Matt McBride's two-out single.

The New York Yankees Need CC Sabathia Now More Than Ever

Entering what could be CC Sabathia‘s last season in pinstripes, the New York Yankees need him now more than ever.

There were many aspects of the questionable New York Yankees rotation that were debated all offseason. That includes who will round out the back-end, the importance of Luis Severino and how the organization can fix the enigma of Michael Pineda.
The only topic of discussion that didn’t involve concern was Masahiro Tanaka, who was essentially deemed as New York’s only reliable starter as the calendar turned to 2017.

Veteran left-hander CC Sabathia, however, was seldom talked about and had basically gone overlooked until pitchers and catchers reported to camp in February. That’s truly astonishing, as the southpaw, who’s coming off a career renaissance of a campaign, is arguably the most important starter on this mediocre rotation.

The former American League Cy Young award winner, coming off a two-year stretch in which he posted a 23-27 record with a 4.81 ERA while surrendering 66 home runs in 69 starts, brought us back to the old days in 2016 as he went 9-12 with a 3.91 ERA — his lowest since 2012.

He also finished second in the majors with a soft contact rate of 24 percent, according to FanGraphs.

It’s also apparent that the 36-year-old kept the team treading water in the American League Wild Card race for as long as they did. From August 23 to September 29, Sabathia posted a 2.37 ERA over eight starts and only surrendered 41 hits over 49.1 (.227 BAA).
But, that was last season and while this year is all about the transition from old to new in terms of player development, remaining competitive is still a focal point. For that to happen, the Yankees need Sabathia to echo the season that altered the back-end of his career from daunting to hopeful.
Anything less, like the three-year stretch preceding last year in which Sabathia owned the third-highest home run rate (1.40) in the league, the desire to compete will become a far-fetched fantasy.

In order to recreate what happened, Sabathia will have to come out of the gate answering one major question: was his success with his cutter an anomaly? How he answers this will have a significant bearing on success.
Sabathia, who no longer touches 95 mph as he once did on a regular basis, practically substituted his four-seam fastball with a cut fastball in 2016, as his use of the four-seamer dropped from 28.3 percent in 2015 to 1.96 percent while his use of the cutter spiked from 0.6 percent to 31.6 percent, according to Brooks Baseball.
His batting average against dropped from .300 off the fastball in 2015 to a mere .224 off the cutter last year. The opposition’s slugging percentage off the cutter in 2016 was also 100 points lower than the fastball was two years ago.
The effectiveness of this increased usage should not be in doubt and an encore presentation the mirrors the adjustment made by New York Yankees legend Andy Pettittecould uphold the rotation that seems contains little-to-no stability.

If 2016 was an absolute anomaly, then New York will be out of luck and that’s why Sabathia is so critical to this team. Manager Joe Girardi knows what he has in Tanaka, is used to seeing the human head-scratcher Pineda and presumably won’t see a game-changing season from the fourth or fifth spots. Or, at least, won’t be able to substitute what Sabathia gave them in 2016 with any youngster if he’s a complete washout this year.
Again, it is a rebuild and the organization will cheerfully accept the mentorship that the 16-year-veteran brings to the young core, but if the Yankees plan on fighting for a Wild Card spot or compete in the AL East, they’ll need another quality season from Sabathia.

Congrats on career win 226

Sabathia (3-2) needed a little luck. Yankees fielders caught five line drives, with Chase Headley twice turning in acrobatic plays at third on balls hit by Alcides Escobar. The defensive support helped Sabathia pick up his 13th win in 20 career starts at Kauffman Stadium.
