This is driving me insane. I am about ready to take my computer in and get it cleaned out (or whatever you call it). I do that about once a year but I end losing some valuable information and basically have to re do somethings that I have set up so I am trying to avoid this route at all costs.

Here is the scoop. My computer seems to running fine but a few times a days I get this "thread infected" pop up show up. I finally decided I would mess around and click it and even when you try and fix it the thing just leaves no matter where I click. I am almost able to live with this. My buddy told me to download some spyware which I did but this thing still pops up but a little less then before. Here is my major probelm that I have noticed, none of my audio/video stuff works (if that makes sense, bear with me I am not a computer expert or even close). So if I go to youtube.com sometimes I can see the video but if I go to click on it then it wont play. I can't see any videos in the middle of a thread here at the RX. There are certain sites that wont show up for me, meaning when I type the url in nothing shows up on my screen. If a website has an audio link to clik on and I go to click it nothing happens.

Anyways does anyone have a clue where to start with this. I want to avoid taking this in but I think it is going to have to happen. I have had major viruses in the past where you just your connection, stuff freezes up on you, everything seems to move slow, etc but this isnt anything like that. It is more like I described above. Is there any type of different spyware I need to download, etc? Thanks

IMO there is no spyware out there that can get rid of everything. "Spybot search and destroy" get high grades, and something I've found useful. I find you have to use more than one program.

As far as the AV stuff goes, I wonder if you have some sort of conflict between software/drivers going on? Do you get any error messages?

Good Luck!

1. need to know which OS ? WINXP,Vista,etc. ?
2.need to know if you are getting any other pop-ups ?
3.need to know if you are using AV ? - Which one.

then maybe ,,something can be done.

Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and run the scan.

Since it sounds like you do have a virus, also go to http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/sysclean.com and save this file to your desktop. Then save http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/produc...ern/lpt247.zip to your desktop & extract it. Now run syscelan.

Read through the log file & note down the name of any viruses that it found and/or removed.

Now reboot and run it again-see if it comes back clean. If so, run Adaware or Spybot & let it clean up what it needs to clean up.

Let me know where it stands after that.

I had some kind of spyware or virus that wouldn't let me go to the trendmicro web site. I use AVG anti-virus and spyware scanner and haven't had a problem since. It's a free download.

Like BostonBettor said, no single anti-virus can get them all. I'm going to scan using trendmicro and see if I can catch anything AVG missed.

ICEMAN, sounds quite a bit like the Smitfraud virus

This link is to an honest and safe repair tool, which is worth checking out.

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php

This as opposed to the many bogus repair tools which just get you to download a spyware program which will then demand you pay for the "full version" etc

Yeah, that's what I had that wouldn't allow me to go to the trendmicro site.

I went there just now and it took forever just to prepare my computer for scanning. It didn't even scan so I stopped the preparation of the scan. Maybe I'll try some other time.

When you run the scan it appears for a few minutes that nothing is happening. It's a good idea to run it when you're breaking away or going out and the next step should be ready upon your rreturn.

I'm on a MAC and I was die hard PC for the longest time
I hardly ever have any problems.. my only issue is with Firefox and sometimes connecting to the wireless internet.

With a PC you need updated Virus software, it's very important. What's also important is that you need to know that you dont have to pay for it to get the best. AVG is top notch or it was.. trend micro is prob just as good

best of luck Ice

I'd try the free download of the ESET NOD 32 anti virus. Run it a couple of times.

I go to system restore and choose a date before the virus hit. If I dont remember the date I go to the earliest restore point available. Its cured me of every virus.

Also only go to porn sites you can trust

Let me add some more info. First off I think I know when this happened. I was posting a scary picture and when I looked at it I clicked on to some site with optical illusions and since about then I have had problems.

Another thing I want to add is I sometimes use Mozzilla Firefox to access some things and now I cant get on there at all. Not sure if this gives people more info but it just sits there and then says timed out. If this so called virus is causing me all these problems if I cure it will mozilla work again? Is this along ths same lines of me not being able to get any audio or video things. Now I cant see a lot of people's avatar (some I can see though).

When I click the help button on the virus popup it takes me to an AVG page. I think they are legit. My buddy told me to be careful as some of these sites that claim to cure virus are actually viruses themselves. Does this help anyone help me with the AVG info?

I tried to download spybot searh and destroy yesterday and nothing happens and eventually it says to come back that it doens t work or something like that. I have tried this from 3 different places. Is this normal

Not normal, but not surprising if you have a virus. Were you able to download & run the Trend stuff?
