my computer used to be blazing fast...now upon startup, etc - it's just not the same. i don't know how or what to clean up, or whether i have viruses that are slowing me down. internet works fine, but the rest is slow. also, my internet explorer freezes and gets an error to close down everytime i use it - which is why i have to use mozilla.

i have windows xp

thanks in advance for any help

Start off by downloading, installing & running AdAware or Spybot-that will clean up any spyware. Also run a virus scan.

hit start then run, type msconfig and click on startup box at the top. see how many boxes are checked off, you probably have too many programs that are setup to run when the computer is started. adobe, itunes and other programs, conveniently attatch themselves to the into the startup menu when you do not need them running all the time

TT - have a laptop question for you. Bought a Dell refurbished laptop a couple of months ago (full warranty). Before I suffer with the Dell talking heads at support I'll ask you what to look for. The laptop monitor after a few minutes gets jumbled up and then it turns black. I still get sound, but I cannot shut down with the start menu? Is this a quick fix, hopefully? Thanks.

What exactly do you mean by "jumbled up"? The first thing I would try is going to Dell's site and downloading/reinstalling the video driver. Hopefully the screen hasn't gone bad on your, because to replace them is usually more expensive than the laptop is worth.

The screen will be fine, then all of a sudden, lines will go across and jumble up the screen. I will give them a call.

You might try ccleaner. It is free, but i have found out through trial and error that i get what i pay for. I have Ca anti virus and spyware and it really does a great job. Cost 25.95.

If it's starting up slowly, go to START.....RUN>>>and type in prefetch. Delete the items that are shown. Do this every couple of weeks.

Have you ever run disk cleanup or defrag? Usually a computer will slow down over time if these two things are done periodically. If you aren't gettting any popups when using the net and your virus scanner is up to date and run regularly then try these two things.

Start>all programs>accessory's>system tools>disk cleanup

after that run defrag which is in > system tools>defrag

what error does IE throw up?

Save what you need on a flash drive and then use the CD that came with the computer to re-install the operating system.
