I have Denon receiver (middle of the pack): Does not handle sound thru the HDMI cable- running the sound into it with an optical cable. Is there an advantage of running your video thru receivers like this. What am I missing?

you want to plug all your audio and video into the receiver and then run one cable to the tv - preferably hdmi

then when you switch it will automatically handle it with one button

otherwise you will need multiple remotes to control the functions- for sound and video

obviously if its too old it wont be able to handle some of the newer functions but still do your best to do so.

these things are getting very cheap these days so not a major expense - although it does need to be in proportion to the speakers you own.

avsforum is a huge help in these things for anything audio/visual
