The Senators traded the aging Dale Long for Lock before he had played a single ML game, and six days later Lock homered in his debut to give Washington a 1-0 win over Chicago. Always a home run threat when he made contact, Lock was plagued by strikeouts, fanning once every four plate appearances. He hit 27 and 28 HR in 1963-64 but also struck out 151 and 137 times. (FK)

Don Lock - a name from my youth.

I actually saw Don Lock play with the old Washington Senators in the early 60's when the Red Sox hosted Washington one Sunday afternoon.

Don hit 27 homers in 1963 and 28 homers for the Nats in 1964. Originally signed by the Yanks in 1958 he never played for them. Don was traded to Washington in 1962 for Dale Long after four years in the minor leagues.

Speaking of Dale Long in 1956 as a Pittsburg Pirate he put his name in the records books for hitting eight home runs in eight consecutive games between May 19 and May 28.

Back to Don Lock.

In 8 seasons in the bigs mostly with Washington the big righthanded hitting outfielder played all three OF positions and ended up with a total of 122 homers and a lifetime batting ave. of .238. with 373 RBI. Don had a cup of coffee with the 69 Red Sox (58 ABs with 1 homer) his last year in the majors.

Someday soon I will do a write-up about a real ballplayer known to enemy pitchers as "The Fat Kid"..AKA The great Harmon Killerbrew, the man who struck fear into the heart of many an opposing pitcher.
