CNN reporting an F-18 jet fighter from San Diego's Miramar Naval Air Station crashed landed into a residential area some where in San Diego. Details so far are sketchy except that CNN reports the pilot ejected before the plane crashed. No word on casualties or damage.

Miramar is where the Navy's Top Gun Naval Aviator school was stationed. They moved the school to Fallon, Nevada in 1996.

CNN has live footage now, lots of smoke and possible damage to private homes. Apparently the pilot is OK but not confirmed.

More information coming in including lots of footage. At least one home and one vehicle totally destroyed. The F-18 is a two seater, one witness saw both crew members eject but only one shoot open. A witness saw one pilot who was walking on his own apparently OK except being dazed and confused. No word on the fate of the second crew member. The plane crashed not far from a school that was in session.

Lots of smoke and fire trucks and firemen fighting fires.

An F/A-18 military jet about to land at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station slammed into a San Diego neighborhood today, but the pilot was able to eject and there was no immediate word of casualties.

Neighbors said they heard sputtering, saw the jet wobbling, and then it crashed, creating a ball of fire. Afterward, neighbors said they saw the pilot wandering around in a daze. He had parachuted out of the jet and landed in the baseball field of nearby University City High School.

Marine officials told The Times that the pilot was part of a training squadron and that he was trying to aim the plane at a deserted canyon to avoid slamming into homes or the nearby 805 Freeway.

Police and fire officials said one home was destroyed and another damaged. The crash occurred just before noon.

Monica Munoz of the San Diego Police Department told The Times that authorities know of no fatalities at this time but that a bomb unit was checking the crash zone to deal with any jet fuel that has not burned.
TV footage shows smoke coming from homes in the University City section of San Diego about two miles from the air station.

A Miramar spokeswoman told the Associated Press that personnel from the base were dispatched to the crash site. “We are still trying to confirm the aircraft even belongs to us,” said Marine Staff Sgt. Bobbie Bryant.

Didn't see this thread. I just started one on this. I live less than 1/2 mile from where this happened. Sounded like bombs going off. Saw the pilot parachuting to the ground. Was surreal scene. Copters and planes flying overhead all afternoon.

I thought these pilots weren't supposed to eject near residential areas, that they were supposed to pilot the plane to a non-populated area even if it meant their own death.

that would actually take some courage. Not the first miltary plane crash in Sandiego. How many innocents have died at those airshows? Im waiting for 30,000 to die at a football game from one of those annoying pregame flyovers.

(CBS/AP) <!-- sphereit start -->An F-18 Hornet fighter jet crashed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Thursday, but the pilot ejected, authorities said.

The pilot was conscious and didn't appear to suffer major injuries, said Maurice Luque, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. He was found near the jet, which crashed around noon in an unpopulated, hilly area of the base and triggered a brush fire that burned about 5 acres.

The crash took place just east of MCAS Miramar, officials said, according to CBS News San Diego affiliate KFMB. Miramar is a large station in the northern suburbs of San Diego.

An eyewitness told KUSI-TV the pilot ejected after the nose of the aircraft pitched down, and that the jet plummeted straight down into the ground.

The pilot was apparently the only person aboard, Luque said.

The Marines said the plane crashed about three miles east of the airfield. A spokeswoman, Lt. Katheryn Putnam, did not know if the plane was taking off or landing.

The F-18 is a supersonic jet used widely in the Marine Corps and Navy. The Marines said the cause of the crash was being investigated.

If I recall correctly, The Great Santini died honorably by avoiding a residential area and taking the plane down safely away from any innocents.

hopefully the pilot will direct the aircraft into a paddleball or volleyball tournament and save around 25,950 lives....

I have run a handful of these airshows when I was in the military and you my friend have no clue to what goes on...
