For those who are still carnivores, here's a meat buying tip. The grocery stores announce their specials for the week on Wednesday, so I wait until one runs T-bones and then I go down on Wed AM around 9. Go to the meat counter a talk to one of the "cutters" and have them cut several "porterhouse steaks. Those are T-bones but they are center cut so that you have a large amount of tenderloin on one side. I then have them cut 2 inches thick, take them home and remove the tenderloin so I wind up with a small filet Mignon and a large bone in strip steak. I bought 8 this morning so I have enough for around 12 dinners for 2 and several "beef Stroganoff" with the left overs.

Hard to find grocery stores that break beef anymore.

It's all precut and delivered.

All chain stores are precut ,still some independents hire real butchers and bring in sides of beef and break it down right in the store.

You could also just use your government foodstamps or go to the WIC store. Just a thought.

Krogers, sale is 5.99 per lb, they charged me another .50 for just takeing porterhouses. $6.49 total, but I have got them there for a dollar less. just depends on the sale. I took it as I was out of steak.

I'm confused, porterhouses are not T-bones, porterhouses have a much bigger filet then a T-bone, how do you get porterhouses at the sale price for a T-bone?

In the DFW area they all have butchers. Krogers, Tom Thumb, Albertsons and Walmart. Walmart, however, never uses steak as a lost leader.

They all come from the same rib cut. Porterhouses are the center cut portion.

They usually just cut them and package the lot as T-bones. That is why you need to get there early on the 1st morning of the sale. I have had them just charge me the T-bone price but when they don't the bump is nominal.

Ahh, I see now. I do know the difference between a T-bone and a porterhouse, that's why I was confused that you were getting Poterhouses at the same price a s a T-bone. I love a good poterhouse :toast:

Sounds like a lot of work for meat.

Takes mabe 20 seconds per steak to remove the Filet, the rest is just time spent at the store and I pick up things while they are cutting, then packing them in freezer bags, but you have to do that anyway.
