i realize things like this happen almost every day, but they rarely happen where we are from, much less to someone that we know...

Estranged husband faces murder charge in Gatineau stabbing

A 32-year-old Gatineau woman was stabbed to death early Friday morning and her estranged husband is in hospital about to face a second-degree murder charge.
Paramedics did all they could to save 32-year-old Lucia Medeiros. She died in Hull Hospital after being stabbed at 424 Des Framboisiers Rd. in Aylmer.
A woman in distress called 911 just before midnight. When police arrived, a woman and a man were both suffering from serious stab wounds.
The 36-year-old man survived after surgery and is in stable condition. Khalid Gakmakge is under police watch in hospital and will face the second-degree murder charge.
Neighbours don't know much about the couple, but said police were at the home just last week, when Medeiros left her husband of 11 years. They believe she briefly returned home Thursday night.
Friends remembered Medeiros as a kind, bubbly person who loved animals. It's believed the couple moved to the area in August and had no children.
A cousin told CTV Ottawa that the victim's large family is trying to deal with the tragedy.
