I get stiffed on $20 bets from friends, when they lose ! Happens all the time.

Fuck trying to collect a dime.

I made a casual bet with one of my likely future son-in laws ( if that's even the proper term for the guy your step-daughter intends to marry ?)

Bet was on the election. Paul said McCain would win, I said NO, wanna bet on it ? I gave him 5-1 ( 8-1) would have been truer, he doesn't know that !

A simple his $20 against my $100.

I drink with the guy, get high with him.... when we can get rid of the women.

Never a mention of the bet ( we even shook on it). The $20 is nothing to me, I'd have paid him the $100 instantly.

What I learned for that $20 is forever !

If Paul just mentioned paying me the $20.... I'd probably say forget it, I forgive the debt, lets smoke a bowl before my wife and her daughter get back from the stores.

I now that I can't trust the guy with money.... that's terrible !

I'll never bring this valid bet up with him, but we both know the bet was made !

Cheap lesson,eh ?

Especially since I'd have forgiven this petty bet, if he just acknowledged the loss.

Jim Morrison called it right:

Is there any chance he spaced it? Sounds like he may have made the bet when high...

Just adding the possibility...

If Paul would have paid me the $20 voluntarily.... I might have loaned him $1,000 in the future, because of paying that small bet. Now I wouldn't loan him squat.

chacun ses gouts !

It's amazing how perceptions of your past, affect your future credibility.

Reputation is important.

NO. not really !

Paul is kind of a loser. He's basically Fucked for like the next 12 or so years via having an out of wedlock child with a previous GF. Paul can't show much income, doesn't have much actually, or else more child support.

I don't totally disagree with a man having to support his progeny.

The more direct situation is my step-daughter, basically supporting this bum-type guy, that spends his money on beer and weed, and has the baggage of a 6 year old son. They are supposed to get married something like 10/09.

My wife sure doesn't approve.

It's one sided, this girl ( Step-daughter) makes the money.... heavy mortgage, Paul is baggage.... bad spot, really.

Fucked up situation, Brides side don't like Groom.... I try to stay out of it. My wife hates Paul.

Basically this girl has low self-esteem..... she's smart, short, average looking ( really), not pretty ( like her sister), not but ugly, right in the center.

It's really fucked up , Jake. All Italian-Americans ( but me).

My wife loves the other future son-in-law for her younger daughter, I don't like getting into this shit at all.

I'm about ready to jump off a fuckin bridge dealing with these so-called Italians.

My younger SD has it more together, but the older one is more book-smart.

I'd rather be in Calif , and deal with Mexicans.

Doug.

Think of it this way, for $20 (very cheap) you learned an important lesson. Another problem is allowing reletives that supposedley have less money than you to owe you money. Naturally I can only speak for my family but the rule for us is wilheim makes more than me so I automatically don't have to pay back any loans or debts. With reletives that earn more than I do like my cousin the dentist I don't have to worry, he by rule, can't borrow from me given he is loaded, neither can his brother the plumbing contracter. I honestly think the plumbing business makes more than the Dental office.

I just Western Unioned $500 last week to my sister because she couldn't pay her December rent, 100% lost money, but I knew that going in and have no beef because she is my kid sister and I never say no. The shame is I was going to send her a nickel for Xmas anyway. Unfortunately I can't do both, so she is out of luck for Xmas as she used that cash up to pay her rent.

Her old man (they have been together since 1991 but never got officially married) got laid off (after 17 years) from his job a few months ago and is collecting $192 a week unemployment while the state of Massachusetts sends him to computer school. The poor bastard is 59 years old and back in school learning how to run computer programs, he just flunked the 15 words a minute typing test but gets to take it over.

The $192 a week is good for another few months unless the state extends it another month or two, not that it goes very far anyway. They used to split all bills 50/50 but now the burden is on my sister who takes home a lousy $450 (taxes are murder) or so a week for managing a deli in a small market. She gets health insurance though and the job is within walking distance of the half a duplex they rent so it was OK until he got the axe. She drives a shitbox compact GM product that could die anyday. That will be another phone call to her big brother.

Sorry for the rant.

wil..

Probably a situation that plays out in some way in most families.

It sounds as though your sister and her boyfriend are at least fighting the good fight. You are good to help them out. Honestly I don't know how people get by. I've caught a lot of breaks in my life and I admire people who haven't been so lucky but are still trying to do the right thing at long odds.

just got bailed out of jail by a friend of mine a few weeks ago for $200. He probably has made $4-5 million over the last 8 years. First thing i did was go to ATM to pay him back the 2 bills for bailing me out.

i have 3 female roomies...one has a boyfriend...I have a large screen tv in each girls room..when she first moved in I grudgingly allowed her boyfriend over..he talked alot of nice shit and suggested I mount the tv in her room on the wall..I said I did not have the time to buy it..but I would give him the 75 bucks to buy one we looked at online..

i aint seen that sob in three months since I gave him the $ for the bracket..I will never call him either..

for 75 bucks I got my total privacy and no guys come over:party:

20 bucks is a great bargain to find out the guys character. If he ever comes to you for a loan you have an outstanding reason to deny him.

yeah, but a friendly reminder to all of us in our 40s or younger that there are no guarantees for when you get to age 59, so make building a financial and employment firewall a real priority. Even if it's going seemingly great today, get those seeds in place so that when the financial challenge occurs, you're more likely to take care of your own biz. That's rewarding to ourselves and of course to our fellows who are then able to use some of their largesse in other areas of life.

DOUG, since it's a fairly teeny amount, here's what I would do to give the guy a fair chance of saving face...or to further cement himself as a goober.

You know when his upcycles (even if small) occur. Next time he hits one, order some takeout food and then tell him, "Hey this is a good spot for you to get me back on that $20 you wagered on McCain".

Now since he's eating some of the food, it's not precisely a full payback, but it gives him a shot to say, "oh yeah...okay...I forgot all about that...no prob"

or, "Huh?"

but definitely one of the two

And if you had just been smart enough to slip that bartender one full bill in exchange for a little extra service - rather than calling him a profanity - the blues would not have shown up to haul your butt to jail.

Timing....It's everything

I loaned my father in law 5k.

He didnt pay back shit for months until I told him I was going to have to put a lien on his house.

Moral of the story: Those who borrow dont have the means to pay back.

I know your talking about bets, which is different, but dont ever bet or loan anybody any money unless your betting into a good solid book. It just doesnt PAY.
