Was talking to a buddy of mine today about kids and cell phones.

We both started laughing about how when we were younger after school we had to call our moms and we would have too make a collect call.

I started thinking about the last time I have had to use a payphone and had to call collect. Not even sure you can do that anymore. Has to be damn near 20 years for me.

Try sticking $3.00 or $4.00 in quarters down one. That's the way gamblers operated 35 years ago.

Not me, but my wife, like 2 days ago.

110 in Costa Rica.

Bought my wife a cell phone for her birthday, last *January*, still waiting for a phone line. Talk about a fucking backwards country.

(Third phone, last two were stolen, but new one is GSM and old ones were TDMA, hence needs a new phone line. Son got a cell phone for his birthday in May too, also still waiting for a phone line. Fucking monopoly government phone company.)

Speaking of kids with cell phones, would be cool if you could stick a GSM SIM in a Nintendo DS or PSP, and have a photo-based directory (pre-program all the numbers they are allowed to call, with pics of the person). Then I could give my six-year-old a cell phone.

In college(1972), I was almost DQd for letting a group play through so I could make a wager on an NCAA Final Four consolation(N Car-Louisville) game. I played bad on the back nine, but I got out of the trap. :ohno:

What about the ghetto's,do they still have pay phones?

I remember back when they would be in line to use pay phone.

And if you were in an impoverished neighborhood it was hard to find a pay phone that wasn't out of order due to vandalism .

[h=1]Free Wi-Fi Is Coming to New York City[/h]The spread of mobile phones across America has led to a disappearance of public pay telephones. In fact, in New York City right now, workers are removing pay phones from the city’s streets. But, pay phones are being replaced by something most people will find more useful: free Wi-Fi kiosks. The LinkNYC program is expected to install 7500 kiosks, or Links, throughout the city over the next few years. The system is in beta testing right now.

LinkNYC Kiosk
CityBridge is providing the kiosks. It is an alliance of three companies Qualcomm, Intersection and CIVIQ Smartscapes. Intersection is owned by Alphabet, the parent company of Google.
New York City will install and maintain them. It will pay for the program, and expects to profit from the Links, through advertising.
Each Link has two high-definition screens to display advertisements and public service announcements. The kiosks also provide high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access, tablets with Internet access, phone calling within the U.S., emergency phone calls, and USB charging ports. LinkNYC says Wi-Fi will cover an area of 45 meters around the kiosk.
Wi-Fi speeds are 100 times faster than home networks, according to LinkNYC. Users have been impressed with the speed:
