Betting The Bowls

By Mike Harrison

Let’s go Bowling…(I know it’s cheesy but most days we struggle for originality)…we are officially ready to kick-off this year’s College Bowl season.

From the Eagle bank Bowl on December 20th to the BCS Championship Bowl on January 8th we’re looking at close to three weeks and more than 30 bowl matchups on the slate.

Sports books are starting to see the betting action heat up on the first group of games, as well as on the high profile BCS matchups in January.

It’s also a great time for sports bettors to take advantage of special bonuses offered to kick-off Bowl season.

Right now SPORTSBETTING.COM has a great free cash bonus offer running through Saturday – it’s straightforward and simple. Make a deposit today (Thursday) and you’ll receive 20% free cash. Make a deposit on Friday and you’ll receive another 15% in free bonus money. Follow that up with a deposit on Saturday and it’s another 10% in bonus cash. That’s 45% in bonus money over these three days (the bonus days actually started on Wednesday with a 25% bonus, so congrats to anyone who started from day 1 and will end up with 70% in bonuses.)

The first bowl games kick off this Saturday in Washington DC.

The Eagle Bank Bowl @ RFK Stadium, December 20, 2008

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are a 3-point favorite over Navy, with an Over/Under of 42.

If you want to look at historical numbers you won’t have to look back far to see their last meeting; Wake hosted Navy in late-September, listed as a 16-point home fave with the Total set at 52.5, but the Demon Deacons ended up losing SU and ATS by a final of 24-17. An Eagle Bank Bowl win would be fitting revenge.

Despite the early season loss, the Demon Deacons have been profitable against the Midshipmen going 5-2 straight up and 4-3 against the spread dating back to 1995.

SPORTSBETTING.COM is reporting 63% action on the Over while a slight 57% majority of the betting public is wagering on Wake Forest.

Another Bowl game attracting early attention is the Las Vegas Bowl, also on December 20
It features the Brigham Young Cougars vs. the Arizona Wildcats.

Ranked No. 17 in the BCS standings, Brigham Young will head into Vegas listed as a 2.5-point underdog.

While the two teams have gone 1-1 SU the last two years they’ve played one another, the Cougars are 2-0 ATS in those games.

However, Brigham Young isn’t a December type of team going 5-6 SU and 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games in the final month of the year while the Wildcats have gone 3-1 SU and ATS in their last four December games.

At 62, it is a relatively high total, but bettors think that the score will go even higher as the Over is seeing 77% of the betting volume while the underdog Cougars are seeing a small lean of the action at 57%.

And how is Charlie Weiss going to fair this Bowl season?

The Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve matches up Notre Dame and Hawaii, with the Irish a small dog (+2).

Some of you might not remember these days, but there used to be a time when the Fighting Irish contended for National Championships, but that was a long time ago. Now they end up playing on December 24th in bowls like this.

As it stands, head coach Charlie Weis has been given a “vote of confidence” and is hoping to end Notre Dame’s bowl drought, which is going on nine years.

While bowl games are usually played at neutral sites, the Hawaii Warriors will be on home turf and the last time they hosted the Irish was in 1997, where Hawaii was a 27.5-point underdog and covered in a 23-22 loss to ND.

The Warriors have gone 17-3 SU and 9-7-1 ATS the last 20 and 17 home games respectively while the Irish are mediocre on the road going 10-10 SU and 9-10-1 ATS in the last 20 games away from South Bend.

The Over is seeing a solid 69% of the betting volume while hometown Hawaii is seeing 71% of the betting action.

Enjoy the games and good luck this weekend with your bowl plays.
